I visited Gopal Mandir, located near Rajwada, during my Indore trip.
According to historical records, this Radha-Krishna temple was constructed in 1832 by Krishnabai, the wife of Yashwantrao Holkar I. At that time, around ₹80,000 was spent on building it — a significant amount back then.
The main temple is built from stone, while other sections within the temple complex are made using stone and wood, especially sagwan (teak) and kaliya wood. The architecture is a blend of Maratha and Rajput styles, giving it a rich cultural character.
Interestingly, to test the strength of the temple’s main hall (Sabha Mandap), an elephant was used. A ramp was made with soil to bring the elephant up to the roof of the mandap, where it was made to walk for quite some time. Only after the structure passed this test was the temple opened to the public.
It’s a beautiful and historically rich temple, definitely worth a visit if you’re...
