The Sawai Mansingh Cricket Stadium in Jaipur is a historic venue that has hosted numerous thrilling cricket matches over the years. While it is celebrated for its rich history and vibrant atmosphere, my personal experience at the stadium left much to be desired due to certain logistical and structural issues.
Stadium Overview
Capacity: The stadium can accommodate approximately 30,000 spectators.
Inauguration: Built in 1969 and named after Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II, the former ruler of Jaipur.
Location: Centrally located near Rambagh Circle, making it accessible to locals and tourists.
Features
Pitch: Known for its balanced nature, the pitch has hosted high-scoring games and thrilling finishes.
Floodlights: Modern floodlights make the stadium perfect for day-night matches.
Modern Upgrades: While the stadium has seen renovations, certain areas still need significant improvement.
Cricketing History
International Matches: The stadium has hosted many iconic international games, drawing global cricketing stars.
IPL: It serves as the home ground for the Rajasthan Royals, the inaugural champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
My Personal IPL Match Experience
I attended the IPL match between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals on 28th March 2024. The match was an electrifying encounter, with Rajasthan Royals emerging victorious by 12 runs. The energy in the stadium was unparalleled, with passionate fans cheering for their favorite teams.
However, despite the excitement of the game, the overall spectator experience was disappointing due to the following:
Seating Arrangement: The poorly organized seating made it difficult to find comfortable spaces, and the lack of proper management added to the chaos.
Double Ground Fencing: The double-layered fencing obstructed my view of the field, making it hard to follow the game closely. This significantly impacted my enjoyment of the match.
While the match itself was thrilling, with Rajasthan Royals delivering a fantastic performance, these logistical issues made the experience less enjoyable than it could have been.
Atmosphere and Facilities
The vibrant atmosphere created by enthusiastic fans was one of the highlights of the visit. However, the stadium facilities need improvement:
Restrooms: Hygiene standards were below average.
Food and Beverages: Limited options and high prices detracted from the experience.
Crowd Management: During a high-stakes IPL match, crowd control was lacking, leading to confusion and discomfort.
Nearby Attractions
Despite the stadium’s shortcomings, its central location allows visitors to explore Jaipur’s iconic landmarks, including Hawa Mahal, City Palace, and Jantar Mantar, all of which are a short drive away.
Conclusion
While the Sawai Mansingh Stadium is an important venue in India’s cricketing landscape, my personal experience during the IPL match on 28th March 2024 highlighted several areas that need improvement, particularly in seating arrangements and field visibility. The match itself was memorable, with Rajasthan Royals winning by 12 runs, but the structural issues detracted from the overall experience. If the management addresses these challenges, the stadium has the potential to offer a world-class experience to...

The Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur is one of Rajasthan’s most prominent cricket venues. Located in the heart of the Pink City, it was established in 1969 and named after Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II, the last ruling Maharaja of Jaipur.
The stadium has hosted numerous domestic and international cricket matches, including ODIs, Tests, and especially IPL matches. It is the home ground for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) franchise in the Indian Premier League. With a seating capacity of around 30,000, it’s considered one of the more iconic cricket venues in India.
While the ground itself has seen historic performances and enthusiastic crowds over the years, there are some serious shortcomings that affect the live match experience — which brings me to my personal visit:
📅 Match Attended: RCB vs RR, April 13, 2025
This was my first-ever live cricket match experience, and unfortunately, it turned out to be quite disappointing.
🌡️ The day was extremely hot, and to make things worse, there were no proper seating arrangements. Most of the stands either lacked individual seats or were too crowded. The crowd was extremely misbehaved — people kept standing every few minutes, blocking the view for everyone behind them. Despite repeated requests, there was no crowd control or assistance from security or staff. It became almost impossible to enjoy the match properly.
💧 By the end of Rajasthan Royals' innings, we were completely dehydrated, so we stepped outside to get water. At the Bisleri water station, a horrifying thing happened — our Samsung S22 Ultra was stolen. To our shock, when we approached the policemen inside the stadium, they offered no help at all. We were asked to go to the nearest police station to file a complaint.
🚨 Once we reached there, we found out we were not alone — there were 10–15 similar cases reported, all involving stolen phones from the same Bisleri counter. We met several others who had fallen victim to the same organized theft.
📉 Overall, the entire day became exhausting and frustrating. Instead of enjoying a live cricket match, we spent the rest of the day dehydrated, anxious, and running around to report a theft. Not the kind of memory you'd hope for from your first stadium visit.
Pros:
Historic stadium with rich cricketing heritage
Central location in Jaipur
Passionate crowd during IPL matches
Cons:
Poor seating infrastructure
No crowd discipline or monitoring
Lack of basic amenities in summer (like drinking water access)
Security and police support inadequate
No CCTV monitoring or theft prevention
🔚 I hope the management and authorities take immediate steps to improve crowd control, infrastructure, and security, especially during big events like the IPL. A venue with such a legacy deserves better planning and protection for its visitors.
Would not currently recommend attending a match here unless these issues...
