A Temple of Power and Devotion – Shri Chakreshwari Devi Temple, Srinagar Located near the historic Hari Parbat Fort, the Shri Chakreshwari Devi Temple is one of Srinagar’s most spiritually charged and culturally rich sites. Dedicated to Goddess Chakreshwari, a fierce form of Maa Durga, the temple is deeply revered by locals and pilgrims alike. According to legend, the goddess is believed to have taken residence on Hari Parbat hill to protect the valley from evil forces, and her presence is said to still guard Srinagar to this day. This ancient temple holds tremendous significance in the spiritual landscape of Kashmir. It is considered one of the Shaktipeethas, and the energy here is intense yet peaceful — perfect for quiet reflection and prayer. One of the most unique and intriguing aspects of the temple is its prasad. Unlike typical offerings, here the devotees are served goat liver with rice — a long-standing local tradition that symbolizes the goddess’s fierce protective nature. This is offered to those who seek her blessings with faith and purity of heart. The view from the temple is breathtaking — overlooking the old city of Srinagar, with panoramic sights of Dal Lake and the surrounding mountains. The peace and serenity here, combined with the rich folklore, make this temple a must-visit. For those interested in divine feminine energy, ancient traditions, and Kashmir’s spiritual roots, a visit to Shri Chakreshwari Devi Temple is a deeply rewarding experience. A place where power meets peace.

Sharika Devi Iconography Sharika Devi Iconography The pebble grew and the asura was crushed under its weight. People were relieved of his cruelties. The pebble grew into the hill that is now called Hari Parbat, after the Devi. The Devi remains on this hill in the form of Sri Chakra on the rock. In iconography, she is shown with 18 arms, holding all kinds of Ayudhas or weapons, with her one leg on top of her Vahana – a lion. In this form she looks like Durga. Hari Naumi or Sharika Jayanti Sharika Jayanti is celebrated on Hari Naumi or the 9th Tithi of Ashadh Shukla Paksha. It roughly falls in July. The festivities begin on the 7th day itself and last for three days. During this time many Kashmiri families visit and pray at the temple. A yagna is performed and people pray for the well being of their families and the world in general.

Temple is well maintained and guarded by Indian army as it is an heritage site. The roads leads to this temple are very narrow. We roamed around to find the entrance. I really appreciate our army for protecting this temple which is the middle of Srinagar town. Parking is very limited here. The crowd is also very limited. You can peacefully offer prayers to Goddess Sarasvati. It is one of the shakti peetha in India. You must visit this place if you’re in Srinagar. It is an ancient temple in the town. Local police also protects the routes of this temple to avoid any disturbances.

The temple is a popular destination for tourists and pilgrims alike, who come to pay their respects to the goddess and soak in the spiritual atmosphere of the site. The temple also plays an important role in the cultural and social life of the local community, hosting several festivals and celebrations throughout the year.
