A must-visit for history and architecture lovers

Review: Chandramauleshwara Temple is a stunning 11th-century Hindu Shiva temple with Chalukyan architecture. It's one of the best examples of Chalukya Architecture in Karnataka, and it's definitely worth a visit for anyone interested in history or architecture.

The temple has a square plan architecture with four entrances from the cardinal directions, and it's adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures. The temple is also home to a Chaturmukha (four-faced) Linga, which is a rare and unique sight.

If you're visiting Hubli, I highly recommend checking out Chandramauleshwara Temple. It's a truly beautiful and awe-inspiring place.

Chandramauleshwara Temple is an 11th-century Hindu Shiva temple with Chalukyan architecture in Unkal (Hubballi), Karnataka, India. It is one of the good example of the Chalukya Architecture and is not less than a marvel when compared to any popular tourist destination like the famous Chennakeshava Temple of Belur.

Here are some additional details about the temple:

It has a square plan architecture with four entrances from the cardinal directions, while illustrating the sandhara plan found in Sanskrit texts on architecture. It originally had a Chaturmukha (four-faced) Linga in the center of the temple and many more mandapas (halls), but the surviving structure is much smaller. The temple is located in Unkal, Hubli City east of the Unkal lake (NH 67, Old NH4). Unkal was historically named as Unukal and Unukallu, is within the Hubli-Dharwad municipality. Chandramouleshwar is a monument from the Kalyana Chalukyan era. It lacks a foundation inscription, and its date thus has to be indirectly inferred by other inscriptions that mention it, architectural style and...

I visited Chandramouleshwar Temple this afternoon, and as a person from Hubballi, I feel proud that such a historic and beautiful temple is in our city. This temple is more than 900 years old and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is built in the old Chalukyan style of architecture, which is famous in Karnataka. What makes it special is the four entrances on all sides, which is very rare, and the stone carvings on the doors and pillars are truly wonderful to see.

The temple atmosphere is very peaceful and calm. Since it is not crowded like other temples, I could spend time slowly doing darshan and also observing the carvings and structure. The positive energy here makes it a very good place for both prayer and quiet time.

∆ Some important points from my visit:

  1. Heritage and History: Around 900 years old, protected monument under ASI.

  2. Architecture: Unique four-entrance design, fine stone carvings, and beautifully made pillars.

  3. Spiritual Feel: Calm, quiet, and filled with positive energy.

  4. Less Crowded: You can take your time for darshan and exploring.

  5. Accessibility: Located within Hubballi city, so easy to reach.

  6. Drawbacks: The approach road is narrow, parking is limited, and the surroundings outside could be cleaner.

Even with these small drawbacks, the temple itself is well preserved and maintained. It is a must-visit for people of Hubballi and also for visitors who come from outside, especially those interested in history, architecture, and spirituality.

As a local, I strongly recommend this temple, it is not just a place of worship but also a symbol of our city’s rich...

A Hidden Gem of History – Chandramouleshwara Temple, Hubli I recently visited the Chandramouleshwara Temple near Unkal Lake in Hubli with a friend on a quiet weekday afternoon. Tucked away in a narrow lane that felt more like a galli, the approach wasn’t the most well-maintained—but once we reached, the place truly transported us back in time. The temple, believed to be over 900 years old, is an architectural marvel of the Western Chalukya era. Despite its age and the somewhat neglected surroundings, the structure still stands with quiet dignity. The carvings on the stone walls are incredibly intricate—depicting various deities like Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma, and Saraswati. You can feel the devotion and artistry of the craftsmen from centuries ago in every corner. We were lucky that it was almost empty when we visited. The peacefulness allowed us to soak in the spiritual vibe and admire the four entrances that lead to the sanctum—a rare and thoughtful design that adds to its uniqueness. There’s definitely a sense of sadness too—this temple deserves more attention, better upkeep, and proper signboards for visitors. It’s a heritage spot crying for love and care. But maybe that’s what made it special for us—discovering something ancient and beautiful that still stands tall, despite time and neglect. If you love history, architecture, or simply want a quiet spot to reflect, this temple is worth a visit. Just be prepared for a humble approach and bring a bit of curiosity and respect.
