കൊടുങ്ങല്ലൂർ പട്ടണത്തിനടുത്തായി സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ശിവക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ശൃംഗപുരം മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം. ഋഷ്യശൃംഗ മുനി ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ശിവവിഗ്രഹം സ്ഥാപിച്ച ഐതിഹ്യത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ് ശൃംഗപുരം (ശൃംഗയുടെ നാട് എന്ന് വിവർത്തനം ചെയ്തത്) എന്ന പേര് ഉരുത്തിരിഞ്ഞത്. മറ്റ് ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തെ വ്യത്യസ്തമാക്കുന്നത് പാർവതി ദേവിയില്ലാതെയാണ് ശിവനെ ഇവിടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് എന്നതാണ്. ശിവൻ്റെ വിഗ്രഹം സതിയുടെ സ്വയം ദഹിപ്പിക്കലിനു ശേഷമുള്ള ദുഃഖത്തെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ദുഃഖകരമായ മാനസികാവസ്ഥയെ ചിത്രീകരിക്കുന്നു. 10-ഉം 11-ഉം നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകൾ പഴക്കമുള്ള, ചുവരുകളിലെ കലാപരമായ ലിഖിതങ്ങൾ അതിശയകരമാണ്. ടൈൽ പാകിയ മേൽക്കൂരയുള്ള നടപ്പന്തൽ, ധ്വജസ്തംഭം (കൊടിമരം), പ്രകാരം (പുറത്തെ മുറ്റം), ഒരു ശ്രീകോവിൽ എന്നിവ ക്ഷേത്ര സമുച്ചയത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.
