The temple is situated right at the beginning of the trail leading to Lonar Lake. It is well-maintained, although you may notice some trash left behind by school picnics or local tourists. (One of the pictures in this review highlights the plastic collected from a water stream nearby.)

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this ancient temple is believed to date back to the Chalukya Dynasty, between the 12th and 14th centuries. It features the Hemadpanti architectural style, known for its intricate stone carvings and mortarless construction technique using interlocking stones.

The temple gets its name "Gomukh" (meaning "cow's mouth") from a perennial stream that flows out of a stone structure shaped like a cow's mouth within the temple complex. This stream is considered sacred and is often used by devotees for rituals.

The temple's water pond is beautifully maintained, and entry into the water is not allowed, which helps preserve its cleanliness. The temple premises also house ancient structures adorned with intricate carvings that tell fascinating stories. I highly recommend hiring a guide to gain deeper insights into the history and significance of these carvings.

The best time to visit this temple, as well as others along the route to the lake, is early in the morning when the atmosphere is calm and the lighting is perfect for exploration and...

About Gomukh Temple

The Gomukh temple is arranged on the edge of Lonar city. In the one the Kunda tank in the temple, there is an interminable water stream. The water stream is called 'Dhar' in Marathi consequently the sanctuary is likewise named 'Dhar Temple' and the Kunda in which the stream is channelized is called 'Dhar Kunda' which is expected by lovers to be heavenly. Figures in the temple inside the pit delineate the legendary tales about the arrangement of Lonar Lake. In Sanskrit, salt is called 'Lavan' and evil spirit 'Asur'.

It is trusted that an evil presence named Lavansur made inconvenience to mother earth. Earth claimed the Lord Vishnu to execute the evil spirit. The manifestation of Lord Vishnu was as a kid. He murdered the evil presence with little harm to the earth and the devil kicked the bucket and went inside the earth. The salt lake is framed on the spot, known as Lonar. There are around 14 sanctuaries inside the Lonar pit. Huge numbers of the sanctuaries are worked in the Hemadpanti style however now have fallen into demolition.

Gomukh Temple is a small but beautiful temple located on the rim of the Lonar crater lake, which is the largest natural basaltic impact crater in the world. The temple is named after the cow's mouth-shaped spring that flows into a tank (kunda) near the temple. The spring water is considered sacred and many devotees take a dip in it before visiting the temple.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and was built by the Yadava dynasty around 1000 years ago. The temple has a simple but elegant architecture, with carved pillars and a dome-shaped roof. The temple also offers a stunning view of the Lonar lake and the surrounding forest.

The temple can be reached by road or by a jungle trail that starts from the base of the lake. The trail is about 6 km long and passes through several other ancient temples and ruins along the way. The trail ends with 220 steps that lead up to the Gomukh temple. The trek is a bit challenging but rewarding for nature lovers and history buffs.

Gomukh Temple is a must-visit place for anyone who wants to experience the beauty and mystery of Lonar lake and its surroundings. It is a peaceful and spiritual spot that will leave...

This was the starting point of the downhill trek to the lake shore. The beginning steps are quite steep but after that the trek eases a bit. On the way is the sanctuary gate through which you pass and are greeted with the ruins of an ancient stone temple. Further on, through the jungle trails brings you to the law shore. It’s not the cleanest of sights and definitely not stepping into. What is awe inspiring is that the entire lake is surrounded by the forests and hills. It’s quite a sight. As you lumber on, you’ll be greeted by another stone temple ruin along the lake shore. Still ahead, will be the Devi mandir. It would take class to 3 hours for the entire trek back and forth. For those hard pressed with time, the views from the gomukh temple should be good enough.
