For a 1312 km long river that defines Central India, the Narmada itself can be various things: pleasure-giver (as its name indicates), shaper of landscapes, sustainer of civilizations and so on. If there were one place wherein the Narmada is at its most serene and pleasure-giving, it would be the Ahilyabhai Ghats in Maheshwar, Madhya Pradesh. Being there close to the sunrise hour is close to a magical experience and I'd imagine that the setting of the sun would provide for something similar!
We had been to nearby Mandu (or Mandav) the previous day and had reached Maheshwar. We stayed at an adequate lodge-like place for all the good places were either too expensive for a quick one-night haunt or were fully booked. Getting up the next morning, I for one was quite happy to be out by 05:30 or so. When we drove upto the place, we found the place in the throes of a pre-morning still when life is yet to stir. The next 2-3 hours are among my most prized memories in all my years of travel.
The Ahilyabhai Ghats cannot be spoken of as one thing without talking about the Fort in the name of the same Queen (a distinguished and unique personage as the little museumette within the fort demonstrates with absurd ease) and the two Temples housed within this amorphous Fort-Temple-Ghat complex. One of them again bears her name: Ahilyeshwar Temple and the other is the Kaleshwar Temple. Strung together through the sheer individual and political will of Queen Ahilya of Holkar, the Fort-Temple-Ghat and the lovely Narmada they are built to pay to obeisance to are a treat unparalleled in India.
Visually, this combination is so striking that mainstream cinema hasn't lost a beat in capitalizing on it. As recently as in Neerja early this year, the climax involves the family immersing the eponymous character's ashes at this very spot with the fort complex in clear view.
Reach early morning, take in the lovely Narmada sunrise, go around the ghats savouring the various views of the other bank and the fort on this bank, take a boat ride that gives you the only means of taking the entirety of the complex in one view as one might see in a movie perhaps. After all this, when the place has seared itself into your mind, you'll find yourself saying "too much!" when you find that the temples inside are architechtural and decorational masterpieces that would be noteworthy on their own even if they were...
