This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva built in Nagar Style. This temple is testimony to the architectural skills of the Maratha workmen who constructed this temple on the bank of Narmada River. It took 34 years to build this temple and at a cost of 1.5 crore Indian rupees. at that time it was huge cost. This temple is visible from long distance due to its strategic location.
Eventhough this temple is dedicated lord shiva, Pillars have statues of Dashavatar of Vishnu starting Matya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Budha and Kalki Avatara's. There is beautiful and pleasant Rama temple inside this temple surroundings.

That it is still a highlight within the walls of the Ahilya Fort at Maheshwar where every step and square inch of stone has to compete with the Narmada and the overall setting is testimony to its beauty. Indeed, for a brief 15-20 minutes, the temple hoodwinked us into thinking this was all there was to the place, a considerable feat when you consider that a view of the Narmada is only a craning-of-the-neck away.
The architecture shows clear Mughal influences through the use of chhatris (onion-domed pavilions). The outer walls and windows are expressively decorated without being excessively ornate. The decorations include figurines of sentinels, dancers, ministers and birds.
