After the death of Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb in 1707, the area of Indore, Maheshwar, and nearby Omkareshwar was acquired by Malhar Rao Holkar, the founder of the Holkar dynasty and a prominent cavalry commander in the Maratha Confederacy. He was then succeeded by his widowed daughter-in-law, Rajmata Devi Ahilyabai Holkar. The pious queen was known for her charitable and religious work. The famed fortress, long and well-documented history, rich traditions and beautiful temples in this treasure trove calms the soul. Alongside these attractions, man-made creations please the eyes of every visitor. It is also said to be the place where Adi Shankaracharya is said to have defeated Mandan Misra in philosophical dialectics in the 8th century AD. Mandana Misra was a perfect ritualist with more than half of his life dedicated to learning and preaching and mimasa. Adi Shankara being young and inexperienced, Mandana himself reasoned that it would be unfair to debate with a youngster in his twenties and allowed Shankara to choose his judge. Shankara was quick to decide that none but Mandana Misra's wife herself can be the most appropriate judge for the debate. The debate commenced and continued for months reaching a point where Mandana Misra was almost ready to accept defeat. Ubhaya Bharati, wife of Mandana Misra then interfered and declared that to defeat a man in debate the opponent should also defeat his wife. MAHESHWARI SAREE A center of handloom weaving since the 5th century, Maheshwar has been producing exquisite Maheshwari sarees and fabric. Introduced almost 250 years ago by Rani Ahilyabai, these sarees are renowned throughout India for their unique weave. Found mostly in cotton, the typical Maheshwari sarees are available with a plain body or stripes and sometimes even with checks in several variations. A few decades ago, the art of weaving a Maheshwari Saree was almost at its deathbed. However, it was revived by the current Scion of the Holkar family with a paltry grant from the Indian Central Welfare Boards in 1979. They started a weaving project involving the local women and called it the Rehwa Society. BEST TIME TO VISIT MAHESHWAR The best time to visit Maheshwar is between October and March. However, during the day, even in the winter months, the sun can be very sharp. It is always a good idea to carry drinking water and keep one's head covered. Loads of pilgrims can be seen in this place during the festivals of Shivratri and Kartik Purnima. The maximum temperature during the summer months can go as high as 46-degree Celsius, while in the winters it can go down to 5-degree Celsius. It's such a beautiful place and a hidden gem. Very beautiful and well kept ghat. There are multiple mandirs in the vicinity. I was lucky to be part of the evening Aarti which was done at 8 pm. There are different boat rides available at reasonable rates. A visit to 'Sahasradhara' in a boat is a must. See the waterfall likes videos for your persual. Drawback: only thing missing was the peaceful environment that I was expecting. In the evening it was really crowded with multiple people selling joy rides on the ghat. They were playing loud Bollywood music and people dancing on video booths making instagram reels.

Narmada ghat at maheshwar is a river side area which is made with temples for pooja in old times. It's one of the most beautiful ghat I have seen. Parking is bit issue if you are coming from maheswar market side. But if you are visiting in neutral time where there is not big gathering on ghat then that is fine. Just above the ghat there is very famous fort and the temple of Ahilyabai holkar. Must visit place. Thanks 🙏

Also known as Ahilya Ghat, Maheshwar Ghat is situated right below the Maheshwar Fort or Holkar Fort. It was built by the Rajmata Ahilyabai Holkar. The architecture of the ghat is a mixture of Maratha, Rajput, and Mughal architectural styles. The Narmada Ghat here is lined up with many small temples and chhatris that one can see from the top of Ahilya Fort. One can see small and big Shivalinga's all along the ghat. Maheshwar Ghat is very clean and well kept. The ghat is safe to walk and take photos of Maheshwar Fort. The Narmada River flows beside hence you can sit and watch it for hours. There is also a beautiful shiva temple on the banks of the river. This is a picturesque location and very calming to the mind as u can just keep sitting here in the light river breeze and forget about everything else. The backdrop framed by the Ahilya Fort and the Shiva temple is beautiful and if you take a boat ride during sundown it is magical. The best time to visit the Ghat is early morning and evening from 4 PM onwards. One can also attend the spectacular Narmada Aarti at 8 PM every day. Timings: 4 AM - 8 PM Entry: Free

Many historians identify Maheshwar as the ancient town of Mahishmati. It is believed Maheshwar was build on the ancient city of Somvanshya Shastrarjun Kshatriya and was the capital of the King Kartavirya Arjun, who is mentioned in the Sanskrit Epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. Much later, it became the capital of the Maratha Kings, the Holkars. Maratha Queen Ahilya Bai Holkar (1725-1795) took over the reigns of Maheshwar after her young son Male Rao Holkar, heir to the throne died, soon after her father-in-law, Malhar Rao Holkar’s death (her husband Khaderao Holkar had died almost 12 years earlier). Maheshwar is famous for its textiles, and no visit is complete without shopping for some exclusive handwoven sprees, stoles and fabrics. In fact ‘Maheshwari’ is now a coveted genre in Sarees. Rani Ahilyabai Holkar’s support to architecture and sculpture can be seen in the fabulous fort and ghat temples in Maheshwar itself. The exquisite carvings and design speak of the vibrant and rich culture of its times. Maheshwar has to be seen to be believed.

This is one of the best places one should and must visit nearby indore (~95 kms) . The best time of the day, that i think to visit Maheshwar is early morning around 6 am. Reason, it is peaceful and serene early in the morning here. Rest of the time it could be crowded and you won't be able to embrace the beauty . So I would highly recommend going early morning at ghat and in the fort. Fort opens at 7 am. And you will have all your comfort in exploring the fort and even you can peacefully take a dip in river narmada at ghat. If you have old aged people or kids in your group I would recommend taking e-rickshaw till the fort main gate. Else you'll have to do some walking(~ 2kms on uneven patches or kaccha road ). Also expect atleast 150 steps climbing up/down inside fort. However at the end everything is worth it. Beauty if this place is mesmerizing in the early morning time especially. Note : you can get e-rikshaw contact from locals or from hotel you are staying. They operate from 5 am in morning.
