Significance - Talkatora Gardens gets its name from the large walled tank; the place is historic as it was the venue for the fight of 1737 when the Mughals were defeated by the Marathas.

There are many tourist attractions which are very near to Talkatora Garden. such as Sacred Heart Cathedral, India Gate, Hanuman Mandir, Bangla Sahib Gurudwara, Rashtrapati Bhawan and Jantar Mantar.

There was a tal (tank) at the west side of the garden, surrounded by hilly ground forming a katora (bowl shaped natural depression). Although the pond disappeared long ago, there still exists at the northwestern end of the garden, a long wall and domed octagonal pavilions at the two ends. This was an embankment (bund) to hold back rain water flowing into that tank. The surrounding area was used as a camping ground by the Maratha army in 1736-3"Saadat Khan (a Mughal army official) had attacked a contingent of marching Maratha army after it had crossed Jumna (Yamuna River). He retired to Mathura thinking he had defeated the main Maratha army peshwa Baji Rao, had however , taken different route to reach Delhi. he did not pillage the city and camped at the Talkatora grove.

The Talkatora Stadium close to it, is also named after it. A tal (tank) situated at the west side of the garden, is surrounded by hilly ground (part of the Delhi ridge, forms a katora, bowl-shaped natural depression, which gives the...

Talkatora Garden, located in the heart of the city, is a beautifully maintained park ideal for morning and evening walks. Surrounded by lush greenery, the garden is home to numerous trees and the cheerful chirping of birds, creating a tranquil environment. Positioned strategically, it lies between Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Swimming Stadium on the left and a cricket ground on the right. The park features two open gyms, a small kids’ play area, and a sports ground available for cricket and football, though prior booking is required for the ground. The park is easily accessible, with the main entrance near Talkatora Stadium and an additional entry gate from Mother Teresa Crescent, adjacent to the swimming complex. The nearest bus stop is the Talkatora Stadium bus stand. While there is ample parking space available, visitors might find the non-functional EV charging station disappointing. Notably, there are no food stalls in the vicinity, so plan accordingly. For families, it’s advisable to visit during cooler parts of the day, as noon can be quite warm and less pleasant.

I visited Talkatora Gardens on 12-May-22 at around 9AM. The park was not crowded, I could walk without bumping into someone else and without having to give way to anyone. The park has great greenery, good design of walkway circuit, and fountains were working. The park has two toilets, both are clean. Car parking was easy, no payment required. The entry and certain sections of park are accessible only by stairs so those with wheelchairs will need assistance. Cleanliness is good except that there were few plastic bottles and wrappers around, but then, public is more responsible to not litter the facility; cleaners and jamadaars cannot work 24 hours. Great place to visit during morning hours. Please do not litter the place or feed dogs and birds.
