Moolavar: Sri Miruthinjaeswarar Some of the important details are … The temple faces east with an entrance arch. There is a 2 tier Rajagopuram on the west, which is kept locked. The floor level is about 3 feet below the road/ ground level. Balipeedam and Nandhi mandapam are in front. The sanctum sanctorum consists of Sanctum, antarala and a mukha mandapam. Entrance to the mukha mandapam is from south side with 11 steps on east and west. Mukha mandapa was built at a latter state. In the outer prakaram sannadhi for Vinayagar, Chandikeswarar and Nagars. The sanctum was built with sandstone with a 2 tier nagara vimana. The Sanctum walls are adorned with sandstone sculptures of Shiva's various forms, like Dakshinamurthy, Pichadana, Kala Samhara, Gandhara, Gaja Samhara Moorthy, Viruchika Karna, Sukhasana Murthy, Durga, Ganesha, etc,. Due to age, the sandstone sculptures weathered to the maximum extent. The Yazhi pillars support the corners with Dwarapalakas. It is believed that the image of Ekathandam, along with Sanakatha Maharishis under Dakshinamurthy is Adi Sankara. (as per Calambur Sivaramamurti). If Adi Sankarar lived in the 7th Century, it matches with the Rajasimha period, since he also ruled in the same period. HISTORY The temple was built during Rajasimha Pallava also called Narasimhavarman-II, period (700 – 729 CE). Now the temple is under the Control of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). LEGEND Sri Markandeya Maharishi worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple. As per the legend due to the fear of sudden death, the Munis approached Brahma for a solution. Brahma advised the Munis to worship Lord Shiva of this temple. To get rid of Poverty, and disease, to increase the life span, Apayamirithyu dosha, (uncertain or sudden death), one has to perform Sri Mruthyunjaya Homam and worship Lord Shiva of this temple.

This is one of the 165 Shivaling in Kanchipuram. Very very beautiful and oldest temple. For the last two months I have visited this temple at morning time. Always this temple was closed position. When I visited temple door was closed position. I have noticed that many two wheeler parked and many people chappal was outside. I pushed the door and gone inside. Someone's Shashti aptha poorti (60 years Pooja) was going on. I can't see the Shiva because of screen. I asked the Priest, how much time it will take. He was so rude and giving reply that it will take more time. However, who performed the Pooja was told that it will take about half an hour. I decided to go to nearest another temple and again came to this temple. Fortunately, the Pooja was just finished and Aarti was going on. I got the Shiva Dharshan very well. After that, the main Priest came out and seen me. Immediately put the screen. I enquired with local people also about this Priest. He was very very worst, never came in time. Always shout with others. Throughout this function, the main door of this temple was closed position. I request the responsible authorities, please check this matter (not opening in time and always door closed position).

A very ancient temple of sri Mrityunjaya eshwara. Markandeya had prayed to Lord here and he is still present here. Got a wonderful chance to witness karthik somwara rudrabhisheka. It was very divine and peaceful. Clean and neat temple. The nandi is not facing shiva rather towards its right, there is an interesting incident regarding this. The temple also has bhairava and surya devata . The temple has a huge neem and bilva tree, very auspicious. Also has a rudraksha tree and manoranjitham plant. It is also said that one who prays him will not have birth again.

May the grace of the Divine...
