About the Temple: This is a old temple situated near Ashtabujham temple. It is about 3/4 Km from it in south direction. The temple is so small and it is in a damaged stage.

Sthalapuranam : Yoga NarasimharThe name of the sthalam itself clearly says that the Perumal is there to help us. "Vel" means wish and "Irukkai" means satying there. Since the Perumal itself wished to stay there to help his bhakthas, this sthalam is known as "Vellukkai". Sri Narasimhar is found in Irundha Nilai and protect his bhakthas not being attacked by the asuraas. To ride away the Asuraas, he sits in Yoga position facing west direction as "Yoga Narasimar". On his own wish, Sri Narasimhar is found here there by helping people from the Asuras. Sri Vedantha Desikar in his "Kamaasi Ashtakam" explains about Sri Narasimhar and his wish to stay in this sthalam. (Kamaasi - Kama + Aasika - standing on his own wish). Vel means wish with pure affection (or) love. Sri Narasimhar who is found here on his affection, is found along with Velukka Valli. Because of this, this sthalam is called "Thiru Velukkai".

திருமாலின் அவதாரங்களில் மிகவும் போற்றப்படுகிற அவதாரம் நரசிம்ம அவதாரம். பெருமாளின் காக்கும் குணம் உடனே வெளிப்பட்ட அவதாரம். பக்தனின் வார்த்தையை பகவான் உடனே காப்பாற்றிய அவதாரம். “வேள்” என்ற சொல்லுக்கு “ஆசை” என்று பொருள். இரணியனை வதம் செய்த பின், பகவான் நரசிம்மர் அமைதியை விரும்பினார். அவர் இவ்விடத்தில் ஆசையுடன் இருக்க எண்ணியதால் “வேளிருக்கை” என்றாகி, காலப்போக்கில் “வேளுக்கை” என்றாகி விட்டது

ஒருமுறை பிரம்மா யாகம் செய்த போது யாகத்தை அழிக்க அரக்கர்கள் வந்தனர். பிரம்மா பெருமாளிடம் இந்த யாகம் சிறப்பாக நடக்க அருள்புரியுமாறு வேண்டினார். பிரம்மாவின் வேண்டுதலை ஏற்றார் பெருமாள். முன்பு பிரகலாதனுக்காக நரசிம்ம அவதாரம் எடுத்த அதே திருக்கோலத்துடன் “ஹஸ்திசைலம்” என்ற குகையிலிருந்து புறப்பட்டு வேள்வியை அழிக்க வந்த அசுரர்களை விரட்டினார். அவர்கள் காஞ்சியில் இந்த இடத்தில் காணாமல் போய்விட்டார்கள். அங்கேயே மேற்கு நோக்கி அமர்ந்து யோக நரசிம்மராகி விட்டார். இவருக்கு ஆள் அரி, முகுந்த நாயகன் என்ற திருநாமங்களும் உண்டு.

பெருமாளின் 108 திவ்யதேசங்களில் ஒன்று. புராண வரலாற்றின் படி பிருகு முனிவருக்கு கனக விமானத்தின் கீழ் கிழக்கு நோக்கி நின்ற திருக்கோலத்தில் காட்சி கொடுத்ததாக ஐதீகம். பேயாழ்வார் இத்தலத்தினை, உப்பிலியப்பன் கோயில், கும்பகோணம், திருப்பதி போன்ற தலங்களுக்கு இணையாகப் பாடியுள்ளார். இதிலிருந்து இத்தலத்தின் சிறப்பை அறியலாம். ஆழ்வார்களைத் தவிர சுவாமி தேசிகனும் இப்பெருமாளை “காமாஸீகாஷ்டகம்” என்ற ஸ்லோகத்தால் போற்றியுள்ளார். இதைத் தினமும் பாராயணம் செய்தால் நரசிம்மரின் பரிபூரண அருள் கிடைக்கும். இதனை “காமாஷிகா நரசிம்ம சன்னதி” என்றும் அழைப்பார்கள்.

கோயில் சுற்றுப்பிரகாரத்தில் சுதர்சன சக்கரத்தாழ்வார் தனி சன்னதியில் வீற்றிருக்கிறார். நரசிம்மருக்கு எதிரில் உள்ள கருடாழ்வார் நரசிம்மரின் உக்கிரம் தாளாது சற்றே தலை சாய்த்து பயத்துடன் இருப்பது மிகவும் அதிசய அமைப்பாகும்.
