This temple is quite similar to the Vaidheeswaran Koil temple near Kumbakonam, known as one of the Navagraha Sthalams for Angaaragan (Mars). It's also one of the Navagraha temples in Chennai for Angaaragan. Legend has it that Sri Angaaragan worshipped Lord Shiva here, and his footprints are found just outside the sanctum under a sculpted Palm tree. The temple is known as a Parihaara Sthalam for Chevvaai Dhosham, and special Poojas are performed on Tuesdays for Sri Angaaragan. It's spacious, with vast praakaarams. The main deity is a Shiva Lingam facing east, while Goddess Sri Thaiyyal Naayagi faces south.Inside, you'll find Sri Dhakshinamurthy, Sri Brahma, Sri Subramanyar, Sri Sandigeswarar, and Sri Durgai. There are also three Chakras installed by Sri Aadhi Sankarar. Additionally, there's a Baana Lingam in the northern praakaaram.Despite an entrance on the eastern side, the main entrance and Rajagopuram face north. Beautiful carvings adorn the entrance sides. The temple's Sthala Viruksham is the Thaazhi Panai Maram (Palm tree), and the temple pond, Vinai Theertha Kulam, needs attention.Surya Pooja occurs in the Tamil month of ‘Maasi’, with Sun's rays directly falling on the main deity from the 21st to the 25th. This event, unique to these five days, doesn't repeat. It's also known as 'Uthara Vaitheeswaran Koil' and is praised for its stunning architecture. The temple boasts a separate Sevvai Padam (legs) and a statue of the Sthala Vruksha Thaazhi Panai Maram, along with three Chakrams established by Adi Shankara near the Subramania Swami Sannidhi. The munmandapam near the Shiva Shrine displays beautiful roof carvings, while the South entrance showcases interesting sculptures. The main deity, called "Vaitheeswaran" in Tamil, is believed to have curative effects, hence the name akin to "A Physician". Devotees visit to seek healing for ailments, as the positive vibrations within the temple are said to aid in curing various diseases.

It is one of the nine Navagraha (nine planets) temples in Chennai (Thondai Mandalam) and is associated with the planet Mars (Angarakan). Inside the temple, there is a multi pillared Mandapam on which are embossed Divine Idols and other intricate carvings. Just outside the sanctum, is the foot print of Angarakan, Mars below a Panai Maram, Palm tree, sculpted on stone. The Sthala Vrikhsam is also a very mature Palm Tree. Bhagavan Aadi Shankar has installed 3 Shree Chakrams in the temple. 1) Siva Chakkaram, 2) Sri Chakkaram and 3) Shanmuga Chakkaram Source: Internet

The temple, with its beautiful architecture, truly exudes an incredible atmosphere. From the moment I stepped inside, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace and positive energy. The entrance itself was a masterpiece of architectural design, a true marvel to behold. Every inch of the structure seemed to tell a story through its intricate carvings and sculptures, though I couldn't decipher all the tales they depicted. For anyone interested in the intersection of history, art, and spirituality, this place is an absolute treasure. It's a wonderful site for both archaeologists eager to study ancient craftsmanship and spiritual seekers looking for a place of serenity and learning

Vaitheeswaran Temple in Poovirndavalli,( The place of Jasmine flower) currently known as Poonamalee 20 KMs from Chennai is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Vaidyanathar or Vaitheeswaran meaning the "God of healing" and it is believed that prayers to Vaitheeswaran can cure diseases.

Vaitheeswaran is a Tamil derivative from vaidya (Doctor) and Ishvara (God/Master). The presiding deity is Sri vaidyanathan. He is the God of Healing. When pronouncing in Tamil, it sounds like "vaideeswaran".

It is one of the nine Navagraha (nine planets) temples in Chennai( Thondai Mandalam) and is associated with the planet Mars (Angarakan). Sevvai in Tamil.

One of the nine planets, Angaraka (Mars), suffered from leprosy and was cured by Vaidhyanathaswamy and from then on it is treated as one of the Navagraha Temple for planet Angaraka.

One of the unique features in this temple is in the month of Masi (Mid february to Mid march). As per the tamil calendar from 21st to 25th Masi, the sunlight falls on the lingam directly at Suryoday around 6AM. The stoned temple is around 1000 years old and dates to the Cholas. However the upkeep and extensions have been done by Pallavas,Cholas, Vijayanagara kings.

The Rajagopuram of the temple is on the Northern side with a 3 tiered gopuram on the Mukhadwaram. The left and right side of the inside part of the Mukhadwaram is sculptured, which resembles the Shiva Puranam from Sati devi to Meenakshi Marriages to lord shiva. On entering, you come on to a huge square compound and moving towards the east you find a small gopuram again three tiered, beyond which is the Temple Tank. The temple pond is known as Vinay Theertha Kulam.

Exactly opposite to this is the Bali peetham Dhwaja Sthambam, and the Nandi mandapam. The Nandi is called Vishnu Nandi. Beyond this is the Mukha Mandapam with pillars, which has very intricately carved frescos of Gods, including Ekpadamurthy, Narasimha coming out of a Lingam, Nataraja Thandavam, Kali in a unique frock(Pavadai), There are many frescos of Vishnu in this Temple.

In the sanctum the lord, Vaitheeswarar or Vaithiyanathar is facing east & his Consort Thaiyal Nayagi is facing south. Just outside the sanctum, is the foot print of Angarakan, Mars below a Panai Maram, Palm tree, sculpted on stone. The Sthala Vrikhsam is also the Palm Tree. Bhagavan Aadi Shankar has installed 3 Shree Chakrams in the temple.

In the inner precinct, you have shrines for Dakshinamoorthy, Bramha, Subramaniar, Chandikeshwarar, durga and others.

The temple is also called Uttara Vaitheeswaran Koil.
