Osman Sagar Lake View Park is aka the Gandipet Park to the general public. This park is abutting the parking area. It was renovated by HMDA and was inaugurated at the beginning of the week. HMDA refers to it as the Landscape Park, Gandipet. An entry fee of Rs.50/- is charged per head. They do not charge for parking. The second park at Gandipet is under renovation and is closed to the Public for the moment.
Members of the Garden Lovers Club, Public Gardens, Hyderabad,(of which I am a member too) visited the park on Saturday. We were amazed at the transformation the Park had gone through! The place was beautifully done up and it was good to see that the old trees were retained. It had well laid out paths, gazebos with seating, etc. A lot of color was added to the garden by the judicious use of annuals, flowering and foliage plants in a very balanced manner. The paths and paved area were colorful too with the use of different kind of tiles and stone flooring.
They had a place where bottled drinking water could be bought. However, the canteen is yet to be set up and as per information received they have called for tenders for it. The old arched structure where families, visiting Gandipet a long time back, used to cook their meals under, is still standing and it was given a facelift. Toilet facilities are also available. They need to set up more waste bins, preferably near the gazebos, as many visitors used the place for having their meals and had to go long distances to dispose off their thrash.
Mr MY Hussain, President of our Club and Retired Additional Director Horticulture, was of the opinion that it was "very good landscape with proper planning. However, it should be maintained with the same spirit and dedication." As members of the club we had visited many newly inaugurated gardens, but have found that after a period, the gardens are let to fall into decay, which is very unfortunate.
Another member, Ms Parveen observed some visitors plucking flowers and stepping onto plants, which she felt should be prevented, to maintain the beauty of the Park
While going through the Park we found that some of the paths become dead ends and people had to retrace their steps back again. We found that visitors, to avoid retracing their steps, stepped over the plants. HMDA should try and correct this. We also discovered that the steps leading to the open air auditorium facing the lake, gave an illusion of being a single sloping floor, as the same color stone was used. This caused some visitors to trip over the steps. We brought this to the notice of the officials there and requested them to have a sort of edging for each step so visitors realise that these are steps and not a floor.
We met Mr Murali Krishna, from HMDA who was in charge of the project and spoke to him about the garden.
The bottom line is that this is a Park well worth visiting and it is beautiful to see the lake brimming...
Read moreOur recent trip to Gandipet to savor the now renovated and refurbished love joint (especially during the monsoon season) overlooking the erstwhile Osman Sagar lake on the outskirts of the great city of Hyderabad with family was a memorable and fun-filled experience. What a treat it was to see the lake brimming with water and the beautifully manicured lawns that drape the waterfront. Osman Sagar was created by damming the Musi River in 1920, to provide an additional source of drinking water for Hyderabad and to protect the city after the Great Musi Flood of 1908. This is the water that the Nizam of Hyderabad took with him on journeys abroad and this is the water body that Sir M.Visheswaraya contained by building a dam using the engineering skills of those days that solved the city’s problems of heavy floods in monsoon and acute shortage of water during summer.
