The foundation stone of the memorial was first laid in 1995. Earlier, the park was named Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Udyan. In 2002, it was renamed the Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial and development work continued until 2002–03. In 2007, the park underwent further renovation and development. It was initially opened to the public on 14 April 2008 by Chief Minister Mayawati.
The entire memorial is built using red sandstone brought from Rajasthan. It is situated in the posh locality of Gomti Nagar, the largest planned residential colony in India. Cost of the memorial is estimated at 7 billion rupees.[3] Its name was changed from Ambedkar Park to Bhimrao Ambedkar memorial in May 2012.

Read moreHaathi Park has always been close to my heart… and holds a special place in my childhood memories….. however, it’s not the same park anymore…. over time, with the road expansion…a significant part of the park has lost…. and now the main area has become much smaller…. the highlight of the Haathi Park is its large stone elephant statue… built to match the size of a real elephant….. in earlier days… there were stairs inside the statue… allowing visitors to climb up to its back and enjoy the view from the top…. unfortunately, due to wear and tear… public access has been completely restricted to ensure safety…. this iconic Elephant 🐘 statue is the reason behind the park's name, ‘Haathi Park’…. earlier, there were also life-sized statues of a Horse 🐎 and a Rhinoceros 🦏… which added to the charm of the park…. however, due to the road expansion… both these statues were removed… leaving only the elephant behind…. sadly, even the elephant statue looks worn out……. once a lively space for children…the park had fun slides and swings that were the main attractions…. but now, there are no slides…. in its place, an open gym has been set up….. which serves as a good spot for the morning walkers and the fitness...
