In Mathakuar temple, there is a colossal Statue of Buddha seated under the Bodhi tree (3.05 mts. in height) carved out of one block of blue stone of Gaya Region, in Bhumi Sparsh Mudra, a posture showing him touching the earth is installed in the temple. It is locally known as Mathakuar. The figure symbolizes the supreme moment in Buddha’s life, just before he became the enlightened one. It is believed that Buddha gave his last sermon here. In 1876 the statue was found broken with two pieces and was restored later. The present temple was built in 1927, by donations from the devotees. There are remains of a vihar which have also been excavated in the adjacent area of the shrine.
