At present there are three temples in the Nandadevi temple complex. Among these, Parvateshwar temple on the left, Udyotchandreshwar in the middle and the temple where Maa Nanda Devi is present is called Nanda Devi temple. The British Commissioner G.W. Trail transferred the idol of Maa Nandadevi to this temple from the Ramshila temple located in Malla Mahal in the year 1816. Since then this temple complex is known as Nanda Devi Temple. The main idol of the temple was brought here by the Kumaon dynasty after winning it from the Badhangarhi temple in the war between the dynasties of Garhwal and Kumaon. Chandvashi king Udyotchand built four temples in Almora city in the year 1690-91. These include Vishnudeval, Tripurasundari, Parvateshwar and Udyotchandeshwar temples. Raja Deepchand also got the Udyotchandeshwar temple renovated in the year 1760. Udyotchandreshwar temple is a sarvatobhadra temple of Nagar style. In this, the altar band built on a square jagati, the thigh part with trigtha, the line divided by four land amalaks, the neck, the amalaka have been made. Outside, the statue of Gaj Singh has been installed in the form of Shuknas by covering it with the wooden canopy of the pillars. Gajathar, Ashwathar, lion hunting deer, snake-Gemini, Pisces, birds, scenes of fun and human-Gemini figures are depicted on the plates. Scenes like royal court, Sura-gosthi, elephant battles are also included. There are also symbols of Brahma, Agni, Mrigarudha Vayu, Gajarudha Indra, Trident-wielding Shiva, Uma-Mahesh. The temple built in Sarvatobhadra style in the north-east corner is built in Nagar style. Its main entrance is towards the west. The statue of Gaj Singh was installed in the form of Shuknas on a plate in the middle of the peak, which is in a fragmented form under a tree in front of the temple.

At first, I was puzzled...so famous a temple yet so hard to find... telling about famous Nanda Devi Temple of Almora. Nanda Devi, another form of Devi Durga or Devi Parbati is the most worshipped deity of whole Kumaun Region. So, I was in a shock 😲...then I find it inside crowded Almora Bazar...but, another shock was waiting for me...so noisy and crowded a bazar...but inside the Mandir Complex, there is another world waiting for me... a temple complex so calm and serene, all your tiredness will be gone. This very, very, very old temple with its so enchanting Devi Idol...a bless for all humanity. Two age old Shiva Temples are just two omnipresent guards...the total ambience is breathtaking. .

Nanda Devi Temple is a famous temple located in the center of Almora, which is famous for the worship of Mother Nanda i.e. Parvati and Shiva. This temple was built by the rulers of the Chand dynasty. The Shikhara structure is different from Nagara style and stones have been used in the entire structure. Apart from mythological stories, erotic images have also been engraved on the outer surfaces of this temple, which seems inspired by the temples of Khajuraho. Every year a fair is organized here, which makes the atmosphere devotional. Reaching here is possible only by road. Parking is arranged before the market. Due to being situated on the hill, the road routes are quite limited.

A Divine Oasis in Almora's Heart - Supernatural Navratri Experiences

Maa Nanda Devi Temple is miraculously situated right in Almora's bustling main market, yet transports you to another realm the moment you enter. The temple's unique placement creates a beautiful paradox - surrounded by market activity outside, yet radiating profound peace within its sacred precincts.

During Navratri, this shrine transforms into a powerhouse of spiritual energy. Sitting in the prangan area in dhyan mudra, you can literally feel supernatural vibrations coursing through the atmosphere. The air thrums with devotional chants, temple bells, and an almost tangible divine presence that elevates your meditation to another dimension.

The temple's architecture - with its intricate wood carvings and classic Kumaoni style - becomes even more magnificent when illuminated during festivals. What's most remarkable is how this ancient shrine maintains its sanctity while being seamlessly woven into Almora's daily life.

Pro Tip: Visit during evening aarti when the Himalayan breeze carries the fragrance of incense through the temple courtyard, creating a truly transcendental experience. Whether you seek blessings, peace, or mystical encounters, Maa Nanda Devi never fails to astonish.

Jai Maa...
