During the second phase of Almora's settlement, during the reign of Raja Rudrachand in 1588-89, a new royal residence, known as Malla Mahal, was constructed in the center of the city. Raja Baj Bahadur Chand installed the Nanda Devi idol here in 1671, brought from Garhwal. However, during the invasions of the Rohillas and later the British, most of the palace was destroyed, leaving only the temple and the outer defensive ramparts.Later, the British constructed new buildings. The British initially commissioned the District Magistrate's office and an adjoining building for official use.
