Bokar Ngedon Chokhor Ling Monastery is one of the prominent Buddhist centers in the Mirik. The monastery is home to around 500 monks who participate in practicing and sustaining the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha. It also serves as a school teaching the principles of Buddhism. The monastery has a monastic college named Shedra. The monastery was founded by kyabje Bokar Rinpoche in 1984. The original intent was to create a small retreat centre, but at the requests of disciples and lay people Rinpoche began to accept monks for training. Over time the small retreat centre evolved to become the current monastery with two retreat center nearby and monastic college, a shedra.
Since the passing of Ven Bokar Rinpoche in 2004 the monastery and its other facilities have been under the direction of his close disciple , Kyabje Bokar Khenchan Donyo Rinpoche. Surprisingly, the extraordinary Indian Mahasiddha Maitripa was said to have spent time meditating here. Marpa, the most distinguished Tibetan translator and possessor of the Mahamudra Heritage, received some of his utmost conveyance from Maitripa. Situated at an elevation of about 5800ft from the sea level, the Bokar Monastery is the highest point and is one of the most important pivots of Buddhism in Mirik. Bokar Rinpoche was one of the most superior instructors of His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa in banishment. Within this period of time, he trained him so much of the prized verbal customs, sutras and tantras. The monastery is a dwelling place for about 500 monks who are involved in the practice and preaching of Buddhist philosophy and Dharma rituals.
