22nd of August 2019 happens to be Madras Day .Chennai derived from thevoriginal name Cheena Pattinum , was once officially known as Madras during the British rule in India . To commomorate this day, I thought it was fit to write about the War memorial in Chennai , located at the beginning of Marina Beach Road , now formally rechristened as Kamarajar Salai after the Late first CM of Madtas Shri Kamaraj . Victory war memorial also known as Cupid's Bow was contructed to commomorate the victory of the allied forces during world war I, that happenned between 1912 to 1917. It later also became the memorial for world war II as well and that took place between 1939 to 1945. This addirion to the first , was primarily to honour the brave soldiers, who hailed from the Madras Presidency and who lost their lives . In those days of the British rule .the Madras presidency also included , what is now known as Andhra pradesh state Its another story that in later years to this memorial was added inscriptions of 1948 Kashmir Aggression, 1962 War with China and the Indo-Pakistan War . To the East of this memorial lies the Chennai port extention and to the North is situated, The Fort St George- The seat of power for the British as well for the successive Goverment of Tamil.Nadu state . The Island parade ground, owned by the army lies to the west and this ground is mainky used for conductiong many exhibitions., The main being the Pongal festival exhibition that is arranged each year by the Government .This exhibition attracts huge crowds from all over city and the state . The Famous Marina Road or Kamarajar Salai , begins with this memorial. It is siruated in the middle of the road that bifurcates into Flag staff Road that leads to Fort suburban Railway staion and the other called North Beach Road that leads to Fort St George and further on to North Madras or north Chennai . Ths memorial is landscaped beautifully and well.maintained and in spite of heavy traffic its pretty quite inside . This victory memorial.has become one of the main land mark in long and chequered history of Chennai which again was derived from.Chenna Pattinum during East India days that carved out of Area under The Nawab of Arcot during the British era in India .

Opposite the Chennai Port Trust Gate No.4, the Victory War Memorial, formerly called the Cupid's bow, is a memorial for the war dead in Chennai, India, It was initially constructed to commemorate the victory of the Allied Armies during World War I (1914–1918) and later became the victory war memorial for World War II (1939–1945). Post India's independence it has honored the fallen Indian soldiers. The outer rooms and canopies have been named after WWI and II battlegrounds- Mesopotamia, Sudan etc.The main tower has pillars around it commemorating the wars India has fought after independence along with the names of the soldiers/martyrs. The memorial has a somber and serene aura around it. It is almost on a traffic island. Visitors can walk around it. Access to the inner lawn and closer to the victory tower is restricted. It is maintained a small section of Indian army soldiers. The memorial is a must visit.

Beautiful mausoleum dedicated to the memory of martyrs who had fought in many wars that India was forced into. The place is in the middle of a busy road and adjacent to the gate 10 of Chennai port. You would see this but you won't look at it closely, that's what I had observed over the years. The place is designed like a traffic island. We couldn't find a proper entry way or a note about the monument. We went inside after jumping over a barricade. The atmosphere inside is calm and the traffic around us didn't bother us a lot. It is well maintained but there's no documents or note about the monument at the location. I won't suggest you to go to the spot to just visit this monument. But since attractions like marina beach and Napier bridge are around, you might want to take a detour and visit the spot. It's a nice place to get pictures. (That's what I think :) )

Victory War Memorial, formerly called the Cupid's bow, is a memorial in Chennai, India, originally constructed to commemorate the victory of the Allied Armies during World War I (1914–1918) and later became the victory war memorial for World War II (1939–1945), erected in the memory of those from the Madras presidency who lost their lives in the wars.[1] Later addition includes inscriptions of 1948 Kashmir Aggression, 1962 War with China and the Indo-Pakistan War.

It is a circular rock and marble structure built in the area that formerly housed the coastal belfry. Within what was once called Cupid's Bow stands a flag post with the Tricolour aflutter, and a squat tower that lances the sky. Beyond the red-and-gold pennants that line the path are steps that lead to a plaque replete with the names of men from the Madras Presidency who fell in two World Wars and those that followed Independence. The towering National Flag will be visible over a long distance and would be there throughout the year. The flag is expected to instill a feeling of oneness and patriotism amongst all the citizens and remind them about the supreme sacrifices made by our soldiers in the highest tradition of the Services. The flag mast measuring 30.5 meters in height proudly holds aloft the 20 feet by 30 feet Tricolour which adds to the grandeur of the Victory...

This memorial called Victory War Memorial or simply War Memorial by local people is a Memorial built to honour and respect those who laid their lives in World War I (1914-18) and World War II (1939-45l) and to commemorate the Victory of Allies. Later it included the heroes of those who laid their lives in Wars of Kashmir Aggression (1948), Indo-China War, Pak war etc. Inscriptions on the tower describe this. I visited it in my young days and have been seeing this on number of occasion while passing through. It is centrally cated on Kamaraj Saalai in between Fort St. George and Marina Beach. From here a road lead to Central Railway Station. This place is very well maintained, spotless clean, and has a spread if Green carpet like lawns. Salute our Army people for this. It gives a patriotic feeling to all those who sees even from distance. This is a Circular Marble structure and there is a beautiful tower with inscriptions on those who lost their lives. Tricolour is hoisted and visible from long distance. When you pass through tell your children about this Memorial and those martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country. This will instill patriotism in young age and take them inside. History is seeing and feeling the...
