I have seen positive reviews of the zoo so I decided to give it a go. Sadly, I do not understand why people find it a positive experience. One of the few upsides is the food – really delicious as all Indonesian food is, and despite problems in understanding each other, local women try to even cater for me being a vegan. It's also quite magical to see all the different species, the charm monkeys undeniably have. Otherwise, I was very disappointed to see visitors' behavior. Not only did they stare at me, take photos of me, and stop whatever they were doing to tell their husband, nan, and 5 kids that "woohoo, a white girl is coming," which I understand is not the zoo's fault, but in regards to the animals? It's outrageous how loud they are, how they shout at animals, throw sticks at monkeys, bang metal things against the cages to make them move and react! There are no guards/guides/zoo's workers to watch this behavior. No wonder most of the animals I've seen are crowded in the furthest corners from the people possible, looking extremely depressed. I've been caring about animal rights for almost 12 years, and there is this stereotype that islanders, Indonesian people have a bit more respect for all life. Absolute BS. Cringy behavior. They're too busy taking selfies with a sad tiger in the distance to even care. Too occupied throwing plastic bottles on the ground to understand that their consumerist, materialistic lifestyle and depriving the natural world of so many species to feed their modern needs is exactly what causes so many species they see at the zoos to slowly go extinct. I was appalled by the visit. My advice? Appreciate it's just my opinion, but the tickets are way too cheap. Quality, not quantity. If they were 3x more expensive, it would probably cut the visitors' numbers in half, which would maybe help in providing the animals proper and hygienic conditions, fund more staff, maybe underaged people passionate about nature to make sure nobody abuses the animals that are already abused. In 6 hours of being there, I saw maybe 2-4 members of staff; the rest were sat outside on a "forever break," plus they were mostly men. With all due respect to religious reasons and the culture per se, but it's not the 18th century to make women just serve food. Oh, I'd forget, the toilets? Appalling. The amount of plastic shit being sold at every corner? Disgusting. Thought Indonesia cared about the environment, but people keep disappointing me. What I would recommend for tourists is having a big walk to the slums in North Jakarta to pull the wool off their eyes and see how privileged they actually are and how much comfort they take...
Read moreThe Ragunan Zoo, it's the best park for enjoying time with your kids. This is the very first zoo in Indonesia. The location is in South Jakarta, and closed with the exit toll road, if you using car, it will easier to reach this zoo, for me, since we are living in South Tangerang, we can using toll road and exited in Exit toll gate at Ampera Raya, it's way faster.
It's better go to this zoo at working days :) less stress with traffic. When you enter the zoo, you will enter the same gate for Trans Jakarta buses (Bus way), you will park your car at the parkir lot that also used by the commuter using the Trans Jakarta to work, pay the parking lot at the gate. It will be hard to find an available parking lot near the entrance gate of the zoo, already occupied by the commuters, you might get an avail parking lot near to the exit gate. The entrance gate for the cars also near the entrance gate to the zoo. It's lot easier for Jakarta residents to reach this zoo, just go to the near trans Jakarta station, hop in and seat. Btw, the parking costs around Rp6000 - Rp12,500.
The ticket price is cheap, for three of us, is not exceed than Rp10,000. It is Rp4000 for adult and Rp3000 for kids. You can also brings your own bicycle or scooter, my kids brought their own bikes, or you just can rent them inside, it's Rp10,000 for one bike or Rp15,000 for tandem bike, quite cheap right?
Ragunan, had around 2000 animals inside, from primates, such as Monkey, Gorilla to the reptiles, such as snakes, crocodiles, etc. Since, this zoo quite large, you will get tired if walking around by foot. So, you can use train cars for Rp7,500 to go around and reach the places you want to see, or just simply rent a bike. Or just enjoying the times by riding horse (Rp5000), elephant (Rp7500) or just rowing at the lake by goose boat (Rp18,000), your kids will love it.
They are some foods stall near the The Schmutzer Primate Centre if you need a rest and hungry. If you want to enter Schmutzer, you need to pay another Rp6000/person. You got to go to this Primate Centre when you're here, it's a great place to learn, especially for Gorilla.
I think the management should adding more trash bin around the Ragunan, or maybe a vending machine for someone who run out water and get thirsty. Hope for much more better for Ragunan in the future ahead. For healthy animals, clear and hygiene cages for them, enough and proper foods also for them.
Well, that's it, I think enough review for Ragunan, I really hope it can help you guys. Please don't littering when you're here, and it will be great if you bring your own water in your own...

Ragunan Zoo is a super affordable place to visit! We took TransJakarta from the Tanjung Duren Bus Stop, right in front of APL Tower. First, we hopped on the 3F line (Kalideres–Senayan Bank DKI), then transferred to the 6V line (Senayan Bank DKI–Ragunan). The whole ride cost just IDR 3,500 — such a steal! We arrived at Ragunan Bus Station in about an hour.
Entry tickets to the zoo are also incredibly cheap — only IDR 4,000! However, you’ll need a special card called a JakCard, which costs around IDR 45,000. If you're staying in Jakarta for a while, make sure not to lose it, as it can be used at various tourist spots across the city.
If you're planning to visit on the weekend, we highly recommend going early in the morning. There’s less traffic, fewer people on the bus, and the zoo is much quieter. We really enjoyed strolling around with the cool morning breeze, admiring the birds, and listening to the sound of flowing water — it was so refreshing.
But after 11 AM, the zoo gets really crowded — families, school groups, and lots of kids. And when I say crowded, I mean packed! It becomes hard to walk around comfortably, and the noise level goes way up with kids running and shouting. So much for a peaceful morning in nature! I’m thinking of coming back on a weekday next time.
There are plenty of stalls selling drinks, ice cream, and snacks, so you don’t need to carry too much in your backpack. Just be prepared to walk — it takes thousands of steps to explore the whole zoo!
If you want to save some energy, you can rent a bike, electric bike, or scooter. Parents also can rent strollers for their kids at the entrance gate. We rented an electric bike for IDR 50,000 per hour. Pro tip: If you’re planning to visit the Smutzer Primate Center, don’t rent your bike just yet — bikes aren’t allowed inside.
Overall, we had a great time at Ragunan Zoo today. It’s a different vibe from Taman Safari, but it’s always nice to reconnect with nature and appreciate its wonders...
