First and foremost, if you have considered staying here, DO IT! Staying at Claregalway Castle isn't like staying at a normal hotel, it's an experience all on its own. Obviously the castle is old and has history, it's proximity to the city is fantastic but the rich history that's inside the castle itself it also amazing.
The owner has gone to great lengths to recreate the castle and how it would have been in the past. So much so that much of the furniture in the rooms is hundreds and in some cases over a thousand years old! Heck, our bed was over 1300 years old!
The sheer magnitude of effort and love that has gone into recreating this lovely place is only second to the passion that the people who work there have for it.
John has been mentioned many times in both Airbnb reviews and reviews on Google: he's the man. His love of the history and architecture of the castle and what the country of Ireland has to offer is infectious. While you can walk around the castle yourself and just read the book to learn we decided to let John lead the way. We were fortunate to be able to do a full tour of the castle with John, I presume it would have taken about 30 minutes if we had just walked the castle and let him mention the history. Instead, we ended up chatting and having a great conversation and 3 hours later had some great laughs and a sorrow of having to leave.
Claregalway Castle was by far the pinnacle of our trip to Ireland and we will be sure to make it back when we come...
Read moreBeautiful place. This is a hotel and the area is not accessible to ordinary onlookers. You can walk around and walk along the old bridge, which now serves as a decoration and a landmark. It is still worth paying attention to this place.
Claregalway Castle is a beautifully restored 15th-century Norman castle situated on the banks of the Clare River in the village of Claregalway, County Galway, Ireland. It is one of the few surviving examples of medieval tower houses in the region, and is now used extensively as a cultural and historical centre.
Historical Milestones • 15th–16th centuries: controlled by the Burke clan as part of their extensive holdings in Connacht. • 16th–17th centuries: the castle was involved in numerous local conflicts and changed hands several times. • 1651: probably damaged during Cromwell's campaign in Ireland. • 18th–20th centuries: fell into disrepair, used as a barn, then as a ruin.
🔨 Restoration • In the 2000s, the castle was purchased by Dr. Eamonn O’Duane, a doctor and enthusiast of historical architecture. • A major restoration was carried out, which took more than 10 years. • Today, Claregalway Castle: • has been fully restored; • is used for exhibitions, concerts, educational programs...
Read moreThis is more of an Air BNB property than a hotel stay. My room that I booked online was not available on my first night because of “plumbing issues” okay so we were offered another room half the size with half the bed. Not cool when you are expecting your actual room you booked online. There are no televisions in the room. Also this “hotel” has no amenities. The court yard area has a fire pit but no wood or fire starter to even have a campfire. Also there is no common area to relax and watch tv since there are none in the rooms. The included breakfast is not breakfast but more of some fruit and a couple of scones… The property is very nice, but that is all there is here and clean rooms. There is no hospitality at all. This property has great potential to be better. For the price there should be more to offer. Would not...
