Read moreThe buildings are imposing and sit in a beautiful space in the landscape on the side of a natural bowl with mountains in the far distance beyond the hills. The pale grey stone is elegant, but contrasts naturally against the millions of shades of green that surround it. A cross between a castle and a stately home, the house contains a restaurant/coffee bar, a gift shop and a food hall. All three are super stylish and appropriately expensive. The coffee and food in the restaurant are lovely and worth the money. Sit on the terrace outside, if the weather allows, and watch the jackdaws and rooks attracted by the possibility of left-overs; they are very brave. The gardens deserve their status in the world and the mild, wet climate has allowed specimen trees to grow naturally to good shape and height. The garden areas with borders are well maintained and planted thoughtfully with good colours and shapes. The more formal areas have some excellent stonework and architectural details that compliment the house. The sculptures in the Italian style garden are brilliant focal points in the more stark space. There are unexpected dips in the side of the valley and these are home to Japanese style structures and planting, with the pet cemetery reminding you that the house has been a home and that people have created this landscape. The paths through the gardens take you through the different areas with perfectly framed specimen trees and glimpses of the distant landscape included for effect. Climb to the top of the folly to look down on the trees and gain yet another perspective on the gardens. The canons make you feel that it may really have been built as a defense for the house. Take time to touch and tap the trees, it's incredible how they can be so different with some feeling like stone and others sounding hollow. Come and enjoy the most beautiful collection of non and native trees in an almost perfect setting and if this isn't enough there is also a garden centre and distillery on site. The cherry on top? - the...
Read morePowerscourt House & Gardens, located in County Wicklow, Ireland, is a stunning example of both natural beauty and historical elegance. The estate is set against the backdrop of the Wicklow Mountains, offering breathtaking views that alone are worth the visit.
The gardens are meticulously maintained and cover an impressive 47 acres, divided into distinct areas such as the Italian Garden, Japanese Garden, and Walled Garden. Each section has its own unique charm, from the classical statues and terraces of the Italian Garden to the tranquil ponds and pagodas of the Japanese Garden. The variety in plant life and design makes it easy to spend hours wandering through the grounds, discovering something new at every turn.
The house itself, though largely a reconstruction after a fire in 1974, is still a marvel. It houses an excellent exhibition on the history of the estate, as well as a range of shops and a delightful café where you can enjoy a light meal with a view of the gardens.
One of the highlights of a visit to Powerscourt is the waterfall, the highest in Ireland. Although a short drive from the main estate, it’s well worth the trip. The sound of the water crashing down and the surrounding woodland make for a perfect spot to relax and take in the beauty of nature.
Overall, Powerscourt House & Gardens offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you're an avid gardener, a history enthusiast, or just someone looking for a peaceful day out, Powerscourt will not disappoint. The only downside is that you might find it...
