Burri Collection. Ex Seccatoi tobacco — Attraction in Città di Castello

This is a MUST VISIT on your list, period! I know, I know....it's a bit far away and in the middle of nowhere, but trust me. Whether or not you are a fan of modern art, you won't regret the time you spend there. The Seccatoi building is very elegant and interesting, with an incredible feeling about the exhibition spaces. I've been in many museums around the world admiring the art masterpieces by Alberto Burri but it was always a spot presence. Here, you can understand his evolution along his life and the path which brought him to his remarkable world reputation. I have been here during a gloomy weekend day and it's a bit sad to see this type of museum a bit empty of people, it would be super-crowded if this museum was located in London or NYC. Gli Ex Seccatoi del Tabacco, inaugurati nel 1990, collocati nell’immediata periferia di Città di Castello, costituiscono un esemplare recupero di archeologia industriale operato per volontà di Alberto Burri che li ha immaginati come luogo adatto ad ospitare le sue ultime creazioni. Vi sono esposte 128 opere realizzate fra il 1974 e il 1993. Burri entra negli Ex Seccatoi, così come aveva fatto a Palazzo Albizzini, rispettoso di tutte le potenzialità di questo incredibile spazio, coniugandolo perfettamente ai suoi lavori più recenti. L’enorme complesso, che risale all’immediato dopoguerra, era destinato a raccogliere il tabacco coltivato nell’Alta Valle del Tevere e assolve, nel 1966, il nobile compito di accogliere i volumi della Biblioteca Nazionale, e del Tribunale di Firenze dopo l’alluvione, affinché restaurati. Nelle opere esposte l’interesse del pittore si concentra primariamente su un unico materiale: il cellotex, una sorta di impasto di legno impiegato sin dai primi quadri degli anni Cinquanta come supporto, che ora viene svelato e sulla cui superficie l’artista interviene a volte scalfendo, incidendo o sollevandone la pellicola più esterna, altre volte dipingendolo. Le opere sono collocate per “cicli” in hangar distinti. Ognuno di essi ha una sua sinfonia composta da più elementi, tutti in armonia fra loro e l’uno imprescindibile dagli altri. I cicli segnano la svolta di Burri verso un’arte più complessa e monumentale, l’artista è stimolato dal rapporto di queste opere con gli spazi suggestivi e affascinanti degli Ex Seccatoi. In questa sede si sono tenute conferenze d’arte moderna e contemporanea, sul restauro del contemporaneo, convegni d’aggiornamento in collaborazione con autorevoli istituzioni parallele, nazionali e internazionali. As a museum writer and lover, this is by far the strangest experience I have ever had at a museum. We were followed around to every room (it was completely empty) and made to feel completely rushed and uninvited. It felt like a waste of 39 euros for us. I won’t comment on the art because that is up for the person to decide, but the experience was awful and uncomfortable. There are already cameras on you being watched by the reception, the person following us around was excessive.
