Gole Del Raganello — Attraction in Civita

BEFORE DRIVING HERE:

If G-maps led you to this spot (the gorge) through "Via Campo Sportivo" - double check your car it is fit for the drive (it might be a dirt road and not a paved road).

In that case, you (probably) CANT DRIVE directly to the gorge unless you have a Jeep or 4x4 as the way down is very steep for a normal car!

How can you reach it?

We first drove through the town (Civita) and parked the car (for free) near the road that leads down.

We then walked down on foot until we arrived at the bridge (Ponte di Diavolo).

From there we continued further down on foot until we reached the bottom of the gorge - the river.

Le gole del Raganello sono un'area protetta (e riserva naturale) all'interno del parco del Pollino, nel suo versante calabro. Sono balzate ,purtroppo, agli onori delle cronache per la tragedia avvenuta il 20 Agosto del 2018,dove persero la vita 10 escursionisti e altri 11 rimasero feriti, a causa di un violentissimo temporale che produsse una piena improvvisa che travolse il gruppo in escursione. Le gole costituiscono di fatto un canyon lungo circa 17 km e sono distinte in due parti. Gole Alte e Gole Basse. Io personalmente ho visitato queste ultime partendo dal paesino di Civita che merita una mensione a parte. In questa parte bassa proprio a ridosso del paesino vi è ubicato il famoso Ponte del Diavolo. La parte bassa delle gole è caratterizzata da un percorso più regolare del Torrente Raganello e lo stesso scorre in una valle più aperta che si mantiene tale fino alla foce. Il percorso per arrivare dal centro di Civita al ponte del diavolo è abbastanza tosto. strade spesso sconnesse e dissestate e molti i tratti in salita. Quindi vi consiglio oltre ad un equipaggiamento adeguato e all'ausilio di una guida locale, di usare calzature comode e sicure. Il panorama intorno vi offre squarci di autentica bellezza paesaggistica. Molto bello e caratteristico anche il borgo di Civita... Riporta indietro il tempo ad ore più calme e serene... Absolutely worth going there, best experience we had in Calabria! There’s a lovely waterfall where you can bath in cold clear water. Be prepared that the road is very steepy, we went there by foot, but we were afraid we couldn’t go back because it was a very difficult hike in scorching sun. Luckily there’s a jeep that helps people to go back to the town - it only takes a few minutes and costs 5€ per person...
