Building commenced in 1389 at the order of the Wallsee family. The ruins of an older castle built in the eleventh century by the Patriarch of Aquileia are located on the grounds. In the nineteenth century, it became one of two residences for Prince Alexander von Thurn und Taxis and his wife Princess Marie of the Czech branch of the House of Thurn und Taxis. While not the wealthiest of the Thurn und Taxis line, Alexander and Marie supported artists and writers, among these included Bohemian-Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke. While a guest of Princess Marie in early 1912, Rilke began to write his Duino Elegies, a collection of ten long deeply philosophical and mystical poems which are considered to be his greatest work. Rilke dedicated his work to Princess Marie when they were completed in February 1922 and published the following year. Duino Castle remains property of the Thurn und Taxis family, and is owned by Prince Alexander and Princess Marie's great-grandson, Prince Carlo Alessandro della Torre e Tasso, Duke of Castel Duino. The castle has been opened to the public as a museum and park. In 1912, Austrian-Bohemian writer and poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) began to write portions of his famous work, Duino Elegies, while visiting Duino Castle as a guest of the Princess Marie von Thurn und Taxis (born Princess of Hohenlohe). While walking along the cliffs overlooking the Adriatic Sea near the castle, Rilke claimed to hear a voice calling to him speaking the words of the first line, Wer, wenn ich schriee, hörte mich denn aus der Engel Ordnungen? ("Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the hierarchies of angels?") which he quickly wrote in his notebook. Within days, he produced drafts of the first two elegies in the series (of ten) and drafted passages and fragments that would later be incorporated into later elegies—including the opening passage of the tenth elegy. The Duino Elegies are recognized by critics and scholars as his most important work and one of the chief transitional works between the apex of German Romanticism and Modernist poetry. They are ten intensely religious, mystical poems that weigh beauty and existential suffering. The poems employ a rich symbolism of angels and salvation, and are described as a metamorphosis of Rilke's "ontological torment" and an "impassioned monologue about coming to terms with human existence" discussing themes of "the limitations and insufficiency of the human condition and fractured human consciousness ... man's loneliness, the perfection of the angels, life and death, love and lovers, and the task of the poet". Rilke finished the work in Switzerland after a ten-year period where depression and an existential crisis rendered him unable to continue writing. Upon publication in 1922, Rilke dedicated the work to the Princess, who he esteemed as one of his greatest patrons and closest friends.
This long-storied castle is a must visit for travellers and tourists alike. 1000+ years come alive in this wonderfully maintained castle with beautiful gardens and the nearby old castle. What I most loved about my multiple visits over the years are: + Incredible views over the upper Mediterranean Sea, the Karst, Trieste and Castle Miramar (another must visit close by); not to mention the fact that you see the Slovenian and Croatian coastline from there. + Impeccable gardens with numerous viewpoints over bays and sea and magical vistas of the castle’s many aspects and features. + The wonderfully furnished rooms with all the original pieces dating back centuries + Hundreds of artifacts including paintings, drawings, sculptures, historic books in the library, pictures as well as family trees depicting the owner’s family lineages going directly back to Charlemagne or Charles The Great from the 800s AD - simply astonishing + A glimpse into the dark times of WWII when underneath the castle a huge bunker was dug into the rock + and so much more On how to get there with public transport: From Trieste you can take Trieste Transport bus 44 running between St Giovanni al Timavo and Piazza Oberdan in Trieste or the APT Goricia Bus G51 running between Udine - Trieste Airport - Trieste. For both bus options be forewarned to get your tickets prior to traveling either from a local Tabbacheria, ticket dispenser or other selling locations as tickets cannot be bought on the bus. In tiny Duino you can buy tickets across from the castle entrance in a small bar called Mickey Mouse - this detail may sound too much but believe me it will safe you lots of frustration if you travel by bus.
Where travel bloggers talk about hidden gems, they always talk about the same ones. I would consider this a hidden gem. I didn't find it in any of the travel blogs for the area but lucky, I came across it on Google! It's a relatively small castle, especially since you only visit one wing inside, but it's worth a visit. You can walk through the gardens, enjoying the views of the castle as well as the Adriatic coast. You can seen Monfalcone on one side and Trieste in the distance on the other side. The Castello Vecchio is on the next rocky outcropping, and you can visit that with a combo ticket, which only cost 2.50euro extra. You can climb the tower and enjoy even better views. Honestly, we ended up spending more time here than expected! The woman at the desk was also friendly, easily switching from Italian to German and English. There is a small gift shop and they give you the directions to the Castello Vecchio if you got the combo ticket.
Really recommend visiting the lesser popular of the castles near Trieste (the other being Miramere). This one is less crowded and offers even better views. 11 eur to get in for adults. The ticket can be combined also with the old castle which offers fabulous views, highly recommend visiting it (200 meters away). Afterwards visit the new castle and you can walk thru the rooms and gardens and many viewpoints. There is also a WW2 Era bunker on site to check out. Dogs welcome, even inside the castle. Highly recommend! Parking can be somewhat difficult, but there is free street parking, just be patient.
Although rebuilt several times after wars the castle maintains it character. Allow a couple of hours for a visit or more if you are particularly interested in the collection of string instruments. If you have an Italian speaker in the group it will help you understand the exhibits' labels! There is free parking along the road not far away but very limited outside the castle entrance. Combine your visit with a walk along the cliff to the east of the castle.
