What an absolute gem in the hills near Torrechiara. Cantina del Borgo is the kind of place you dream about discovering on a trip through Italy. The owner is one of the kindest and most welcoming hosts we have met. He does not speak much English, but with a smile, some hand gestures, and a translator app if needed, you will have no trouble navigating your way through a tasting.
The wines are exceptional and easily among the best we have tasted not just in Italy but across Europe. The reds are rich and full of character, pairing beautifully with local cured meats and Parmesan cheese that are served alongside the tastings. His white wines are equally impressive, crisp and refreshing, and make a wonderful contrast. Tastings are generous, often complimentary with purchase, and the experience feels personal and authentic rather than commercial.
There is also a sense of history in this place. The vineyards surrounding the cantina have been cultivated for generations, spread across the rolling hills that lead into the valley below Torrechiara Castle. You can feel that tradition in every glass.
Between the warm hospitality, the outstanding wine, and the rustic charm of the cellar and property, this is an experience well worth the drive. Take your time, enjoy the pairings, and be sure to leave with a few bottles to...
