A great experience! We totally recommend going on this guided tour (the cave is not open for public).
Here are some details: We tried to visit other caves/grottas on our own, but it was difficult to find them. So we called the guide (number from the website) to book a tour for Grotta di Gana 'e Gortoe. She gave us a slot for the same day, which was convenient for us. The grotta was easy to find (exactly where Google leads you) and there was free parking on the street. Our guide arrived early to greet us and equipped us with a helmet with headlights. We both wore our own water shoes, a t-shirt, and short, sporty pants. Some might prefer long pants, but we didn't mind the mud. Just don't wear too nice clothes. In the beginning of the tour you have to crawl through a small opening an keep crawling for a few meters (the ground is something like soft clay). But most of the time we walked more or less upright. We had to duck and bend and climb at a few spots, which was a lot of fun for us. Our guide lead us each step of the way, showed us where to walk and hold on to to be secure. Although we were surprised at first when we realized how deep inside we were going, we felt safe with our guide the entire time. She is a passionate geologist who was able to give us interesting insight, talk about her experience and findings (even from jurassic times) in the cave.
Again, we had an amazing time on our first grotta tour and definitely recommend it.

Read moreWe found the cave by chance on Google Maps and took the bus to Siniscola in the early afternoon. Once there, the cave guide told us the opening times. After a short wait, we were given helmets with headlamps and a briefing before entering the cave. People with claustrophobia should be aware that it is not easy to visit the cave as the entrance is very narrow.
The guide was fantastic, took her time, gave us the safety instructions and due to other circumstances we were allowed to explore the cave with her in pairs. She took her time and taught us a lot about the caves and their history. Her enthusiasm for caving was infectious and we were very curious about her work. All in all, a wonderful experience that we would recommend to anyone.
Finally, we would like to come back to some 1-🌟 reviews: We think it is a shame that these ratings were given due to the closed nature of the cave and in no way reflect the beauty and science of the...
Read moreThis is a must see! There is no front office so you have to call the listed number, agree on a time and the guide will meet you at the gate. It was €12 per person for a one hour tour to be paid in cash. You will need closed shoes and clothes that can get a little bit muddy. The guide supplied us with helmets with lights. The tour was amazing, right away we had to crawl through small spaces and really got to experience the cave. It is an adventurous tour, but nothing crazy. We visited with children between 9 and 15 years old and they all loved it as did we. The guide was very friendly and told us a lot about the...
