Museo Provinciale di Torcello — Attraction in Venice

I have to mark it down mainly due to rude staff. Normally when you pay an entrance fee they have a toilet, Torcello only has 1 public bathroom which you have to pay €1.50. This would have been okay, if it was open. It was closed for maintenance, and the staff didn’t know so when I kept asking they kept telling us to go there, other people were having the same issue. Then they basically said not our problem, and one person recommended the bar. Too bad bars aren’t open in the morning.

The small but interesting collection is divided between two buildings, the Palazzo dell’Archivio (archaeological finds from the mainland) and, in my opinion, the more interesting Palazzo del Consiglio (medieval artefacts, many of which come from the handful of churches and convents that once flourished on Torcello). Al primo piano del museo vi sono delle tele raffiguranti alcuni momenti del martirio (prolungato e continuativo) di Santa Cristina da Bolsena (VT). Mi ha colpito particolarmente il quadro che riproduco, di cui non ricordo l'autore. La Santa è ritratta nuda legata ad una colonna ove subisce il supplizio della fustigazione. La gamba sinistra è rialzata nel tentativo di nascondere le parti intime nonostante la dura prova. Ma ciò che ho notato che è sola, differentemente da altre icone cristiane di questo tipo, nessun angelo la conforta, magari ponendole la palma del martirio, né si notano personaggi mossi a pietà intorno a lei ma solo dei curiosi, un carnefice a riposo, alcuni infingardi, sdraiati a terra, forse ubriachi. In fondo alla scena, però, seminascosto, si nota un volto sbiadito, incolore, di un misterioso...
