We had a wonderful stay at Kutsurogijuku Shintaki in February 2025. The road up to the property was quite snowy, and we were a bit concerned in our smaller car, but upon arrival, we found the staff actively attending to the road, directing guests, and ensuring smooth access to ample parking at the top of the hill. The parking lot conveniently connects to the main building, and clear signage (including English translations) guided us to the front desk on the first floor. The front desk staff were incredibly kind and welcoming, providing assistance with sufficient English. We stayed in Room 11, which was impeccably clean, well-prepared, and thoughtfully designed for comfort. The room featured modern amenities, including separate toilet and shower rooms, a table, bar, and refrigerator stocked with both complimentary (tea, juice, beer) and paid (wine, whisky) drinks. The beds were large and comfortable, complemented by a desk, futon, and smart TV. Leisure clothing was provided for guests, and the bathroom was stocked with high-quality toiletries and personal care products. One of the highlights of our stay was the private onsen attached to the room. The mineral spring water was clean and refreshing, and the spacious outdoor deck overlooked the river while maintaining privacy behind a lattice screen. It was a fantastic space for hours of relaxing soaking. Our room also provided access to a VIP lounge, which offered additional complimentary and for-purchase snack and drink options. Throughout the property, we enjoyed various amenities, including a library, ping pong area, and several inviting indoor and outdoor relaxation spaces. The staff worked tirelessly to maintain the rooms, ensure a welcoming environment, and even cleared the snow from our vehicle each morning—a thoughtful and much-appreciated touch. The meals were another highlight of our experience. Breakfast was an abundant brunch buffet featuring a variety of excellent options, including both traditional Japanese and Western-style dishes. Each night, we enjoyed multi-course dinners showcasing seasonal and local ingredients, with an ever-changing selection of seafood, beef, and other regional delicacies. Every meal was beautifully presented, fresh, and incredibly flavorful, complemented by outstanding service. As a tall (6'3") and larger (350 lbs) guest, I found the accommodations very comfortable, though I did need to duck in a few places, and the provided leisure clothing did not fit me. Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and look forward to returning. One small improvement I would suggest is offering more non-alcoholic beverage options at meals, including sparkling mineral water, which would be a refreshing option between onsen soaks. While we primarily enjoyed the private onsen in our room, we briefly checked out the public baths, which were well-maintained, with a clearly defined schedule for men's, women's, and private soaking times. The property also has vending machines, including a milk and coffee milk dispenser—another nice touch. Overall, Kutsurogijuku Shintaki is a truly special place. The property is stunning, the staff is incredibly caring and hardworking, and the location is breathtaking. Our experience here made us fall in love with Japan, and we cannot wait to return. Highly recommended!

We didn’t start off well. The parking lady refused to let us remove our luggage from the trunk before parking the car…because…why? We are both very old and they did not help us with the luggage or even show us where the room or elevator are located. They did provide a map with tiny lettering…that wasn’t very helpful. The room is so small that we have to turn sideways to walk by the beds. No bath with the room. Tiny sink, no amenities, bad lighting, rock-like mattresses, and a dangerous step-down to the genkan. There is no hot water in the sink, the toilet seat heat doesn’t work, and the bidet water is ice-cold. If you have luggage, be prepared to put it on the couch, because there is no room anywhere else. We had two small suitcases, and thus had nowhere to sit except the beds Worse, one of the bed supports sticks out and our shins are now bloody from slamming into it—it’s invisible from above. We finally stuffed a pillow under the mattress to pad it. There is no chair for the desk—only a tiny stool with a hard seat. the desk is a reasonable size, but ours was so beat up it had splinters. They do not change the sheets at all or clean the room. They will empty the trash can and might change the towels, but these are so small they are useful only for face cloths— two tiny towels are all you get. The soap bottles are dirty. There are public baths, but the water is way too hot for us, so it’s sponge baths for the next few days. If you want to wash your hair, well, forget it unless you can stick your head under the tiny faucet and don’t mind the cold water that trickles out of the tap. A private baths will cost you 1500 yen. The hotel is not within walking distance of anything. There is a breakfast service but no dinner. This place makes Motel 6 look like the Ritz. Avoid this place unless you adore super-hot onsen and are less than 4’ tall. We were originally going to stay a week, but after using up all our band-aids on our bloody shins, we decided to check out early and forfeit payment.

Kutsurogijuku Shintaki in Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima embodies authentic rustic charm. I stayed here for three nights and didn’t get any meals, which I didn’t regret. I had a car so I went out every day and found great stuff to eat, especially Kitakata ramen 🍜, which is famous for good reasons. The first morning I was here I took a walk down the road and went off the beaten path. Climbing up some abandoned stairs that don’t get much use, I encountered this bear cub who was so cute. Still, I knew better than to linger for long because the mama bear was probably nearby and would have utterly destroyed me if I had blocker her access to her darling cub. The hotel is really nice. Old and historical. There are two hot springs and they are quite lovely. Relaxing and unique in their own ways. I spent a lot of time in both of them. The one that looks out over the river is quite special. I’ve never been anywhere quite like it. I went to one down in Izu where you look out at a waterfall but I like the flowing river as well. The other one is wonderful on a rainy night like tonight. The staff was very kind to me. The parking situation is a little bit tough. The property is nestled up against a mountain and a river so their space is at a premium. I understand their concerns. I got a good deal online, which required me to check in late and check out early which I don’t mind at all. I will happily come back here again with my family and at that time I will make sure to try the delicious food which is also highly rated. It’s nice to see local hotels like this thriving. There are many hotels around it which don’t seem to be doing as well but this one is a keeper. Thank you 🙏🎉😄
