This forested terrace was enchanting, and I couldn’t stop taking photos. Every corner, every angle seemed to radiate magic. The lights, the snow, and the quietness of the forest created an atmosphere that was both serene and surreal.

I made a full round of the boardwalk, determined to explore every lodge and capture as much as I could with my camera. Time slipped by unnoticed as I wandered through this dreamlike landscape, occasionally peeking into the lodges and chatting with some of the shopkeepers. Ningle Terrace in Furano, Hokkaido, is a charming collection of artisanal shops nestled in a forested area, creating a magical atmosphere, especially when illuminated at night. Located near the New Furano Prince Hotel, this picturesque shopping village consists of wooden cottages connected by boardwalks, each showcasing handcrafted goods such as candles, woodwork, and glass art.

The terrace is designed to blend seamlessly with nature, offering visitors a tranquil escape where art and craftsmanship intertwine with the surrounding forest. During winter, the snow-covered cottages and twinkling lights add to its fairy-tale-like ambiance. Visitors can also enjoy a cozy café serving baked milk, cakes, and other treats while taking in the serene environment.

Entry to Ningle Terrace is free, making it an accessible and worthwhile destination for those who appreciate unique souvenirs and the beauty of handmade crafts. The best time to visit Ningle Terrace depends on the experience you're looking for. If you want to enjoy its magical winter ambiance, the months of December to February are ideal, when the cottages are covered in snow and illuminated beautifully at night.

However, if you prefer a milder climate, visiting in spring or autumn allows you to explore the terrace with pleasant temperatures and vibrant seasonal colors. Summer is also a great time to visit, as Furano is famous for its lavender fields, which bloom from late June to...

Ningle Terrace – ニングルテラス 🌲✨

If you like quaint little cabins tucked in the forest, each glowing like a lantern in the night, and the occasional throne of Japanese tourists posing for Instagram—this is your fairytale stop in Furano.

Just steps below the New Furano Prince Hotel and right next to the ropeway (ゴンドラ) that will whisk you up the mountain, Ningle Terrace feels like you’ve stumbled into a secret woodland village. In summer, it’s cooler here than most of Japan—think gentle alpine breeze instead of city heat. In winter, the snow piles high, the boardwalk crunches under your boots, and every cabin is a warm beacon.

💡 History: Ningle Terrace opened in 1995, inspired by the storybook world of “Ninguru”—tiny forest-dwelling fairies from Japanese folklore, popularized by Furano-born writer Satoshi Kuramoto (倉本聰). He envisioned a place where artisans could sell handmade crafts in harmony with nature. Today, each cabin is an artisan’s workshop: wood carving, glasswork, candles, leather, and even paper art. It’s not mass-produced junk—you’ll find one-of-a-kind souvenirs that actually mean something.

🌙 Night Magic: Come after sunset. The forest is lit with warm amber lights, snow muffles the air, and the boardwalk twists between glowing huts. Romantic AF, peaceful, and a little surreal. Perfect date spot, perfect photo spot, perfect “I can’t believe this is Japan” moment.

🎯 Tips: • 入場無料 – Free entry, but bring cash (現金) for purchases. • Combine with dinner at a Furano izakaya, or hit the Snow Night Fantasy event in winter. • Wear warm clothes in winter—Hokkaido cold is not “Tokyo cold.” • Early evenings get busy with tour buses—go later for quiet magic.

📍 Location: Steps from the New Furano Prince Hotel, right beside the Furano Ropeway (富良野ロープウェー).

Ningle Terrace is a magical escape that blends nature, creativity, and charm. This enchanting village of log cottages is home to cozy artisan shops where local craftspeople showcase their talents. Each shop offers unique, handcrafted items such as candles, glassware, and intricate woodwork, making it the perfect place to find one-of-a-kind souvenirs.

One of the highlights of Ningle Terrace is the opportunity to join a workshop led by the artisans themselves. Visitors can create their own crafts, like personalized candles or decorative trinkets, allowing a hands-on experience that deepens your connection to the local artistry.

As night falls, the night illumination transforms the terrace into a scene straight out of a fairy tale. Soft lights line the wooden pathways, casting a warm glow on the cottages and surrounding forest. The atmosphere is serene and romantic, ideal for a peaceful evening stroll or capturing stunning photographs.

Ningle Terrace is not just a shopping destination but a journey into Furano’s creative spirit. Whether you’re admiring the craftsmanship, participating in a workshop, or simply soaking in the illuminated beauty of the log cottages, it’s an unforgettable experience that appeals to visitors...
