Nejō Castle Ruins, Honmaru-ato — Attraction in Hachinohe

This was awesome. The ceremony building was set with scenes to demonstrate how things were when it was in use. Some of the site is just foundations but they have illustrations of what it looked like in the past. A lovely live archaeological site and museum in one. Most of the area near the castle is a local park used for festivals.

南北朝時代において、 南朝方に与した、南部師行が築城した。 南部師行については、甲斐国波木井の地頭職であったところ、1333年、後醍醐天皇の皇子義良親王を奉じて、陸奥国司として奥州に下向した南朝方の武将北畠顕家に従い陸奥に下向し、翌1334年、糠部郡八森に城を築き、この城が南朝の根拠地となることを願い、根城と名付けたという。 南部師行は、糠部郡の郡代として、鎌倉幕府の北条残党の鎮圧や切り崩し等を行い、陸奥北部で南朝の勢力を広め、北畠顕家の留守の間は、多賀城を守る等の活躍をし、1337年には北畠顕家に従い、京に向けて出発し、途中鎌倉を占領、1338年1月には美濃国青野原(岐阜県大垣市)で北朝方を破るが、同年5月、和泉国石津の戦いで北朝方の高師直に敗れ、北畠顕家と共に戦死した。 この頃の活動から、南部氏の惣領は、盛岡藩を立てた三戸南部氏ではなく、根城南部氏(八戸氏)だったともみられている。 師行死後、1392年...
