HIMEJI STATION — Attraction in Himeji

This is a really nice station, and not as busy or crowded as the really big ones like Tokyo and Kyoto, but with the same conveniences. Himeji is a great city that treated us really well as guests, one of our taxi drivers in Himeji that we got here at the station was the nicest one we had the whole trip and he was so super duper excited to talk to us and was very excited to take us back to our ship in port on Diamond Princess. Really, one of our favorite memories from Japan, the people and their friendliness and excitement. The station was great, nice and clean and efficient. There was an enclosed waiting room to keep you out of the elements while you waited for your train which was a really nice feature since it was freezing cold even thought it was April. The lady that had the little convenience stand was really helpful about showing us where we needed to wait to get on the train. We could see Himeji castle from the platform which was really cool, and one of the highlights was watching the shinkansen blow past us at full speed since not all trains stop in Himeji. It was literally blink and you miss it! I loved riding the shinkansen into Kyoto, which only took about 30 minutes. Amazing! I think we got to Osaka in about 5 minutes it was unreal how fast...

A sweet gateway station to Himeji castle. There are plenty of things to see and do in the medium-big station itself. Besides, restrooms, lockers, counters, ekiben food kiosks, restaurants. There is also an interesting pastry/sweets delicacy souvenir shop. You can get to Himeji castle by 20min walk, it is quite straight forward (just follow others) straight north literally and you will be at the south gate entrance. Alternatively you can hitch a local bus for one stop (!) but google maps does not show actual bus number but Kanji Japanese names :P There is also a huge proper grocery mart midway (east side) to take a rest stop or aircon/heater and they sell all manners of interesting food items fresh/preserved/packaged...

If you are heading from Himeji to Hiroshima, Hakata, or Kagoshima-Chuo, we recommend using Mizuho or Sakura.

Mizuho and Sakura are 8-car trains.
