A great value lodging option inside Kamikochi! We woke up to the most amazing view from the balcony of our room (#23). The views, seeing the star filled sky at night, falling asleep to the sound of the nearby Azusa River, and great dinner of local mountain ingredients were worth the premium you pay to stay overnight inside Kamikochi. We wish we’d stayed two rather than just 1 night. The slight downside is that the Japanese futon rooms do not have an in room bathroom. The toilets are just steps down the hall and there is a shared large bath (sento) that while gender separated is not private. So if you aren’t comfortable with that you’ll need to stay at one of the more expensive hotels in Kamikochi. The location of this lodge is just a 5 minute walk from Kappa Bridge and the staff speak English. We loved the mountain feel of the lodge with lots of warm wood floors, columns, and stairs and would stay here again if we came back to Kamikochi. Checkin is at 2:00 pm and checkout is at 9:30 AM but they will keep your luggage in the lobby for no charge while you explore the park. Highly recommend just coming with a backpack as you’ve got to walk about 10 minutes from the bus terminal to the hotel along a dirt path so roller suitcases will get dusty or muddy if raining.

Did you ever want to feel what modern day segregation feels like? Do you dream of being treated like a second class-citizen? Do you want to pay lots of money for something that’s worth very little? Then book a bed/room in the annex of the Nishi-Itoya Mountain lodge, you WILL regret it. Travelling with my siblings and my father, all 18+ adults, we wanted to visit Kamikochi. Despite booking several months in advance, availability is very low in this mountain « town », so we had few options. Seeing the excellent reviews, and good pricing, I thought this place was the right choice. Boy, was I wrong. The annex, supposed to sleep up to 8, was the perfect option in my mind: it would be spacious as there is only 5 of us, the view looked lovely, the bath looked nice, etc. But then, the fairy tale turned into something less beautiful, way less. After a 10’ wall with the luggage to the lodge, we enter towards the reception, and I get my best Japanese skills out to say hello. The response I get left me speechless : « The 5 Japan Raill Pass, you’re in the annex. Go out to the end of the building and turn right. » [I assume that calling us « Japan Rail Pass » is a way of saying western tourists, as most of us travel indeed by train on a JRP. This is not acceptable for any establishment, you don’t treat paying customers like that.] This, ladies and gents, is the beginning of the Nishi-Itoya segregation process. You enter a very ugly looking building, not pictured on their website obviously, and are met by one other employee (maybe the grandson of the owner? Not sure). It’s then that I realized that the annex wasn’t a tiny building just for us, but a hallway full of 8 people rooms (4 in bunks, 4 on tatamis), shady lights, mosquitoes, flies and even a few wasps flying around. That’s for the second floor. As for the first floor, there is a dining room (because you wouldn’t wanna mix people from the annex with other people, right), toilets, and a shared sink for washing. When I asked about the « real » baths (that were pictured on the website), they said it was in the main building, but didn’t seem too excited about us using it. The room was much smaller that it seemed in photos, it’s old looking, it smells bad, it’s dirty, walls are paper thin, it’s in bad condition and the lack of air makes it way too hot to satay in before late at night when it cools outside. In addition, we all woke up with back and neck pain due to the lack of comfort on the beds, beds that you have to make yourself btw. The best part I think we’re the pillows that all smelled like mold. A pleasure. If you want towels, a kimono etc, you have to pay for it (things that you get for free in the main building). Diner and breakfast were ok taste wise, good quantity, but cold upon serving and, as I said before, just with the few other annex guests. I should add that if you book for less than 4, you have to share that room like in a hostel. We had asked to change and « upgrade » to the main building but t was only available for our second night. Main building wasn’t great but better (would give it 3,5/5). For the little price difference with the annex you get a much better value. Most reviews here talk about the main building and I mostly agree with the comments and criticisms made, so this is why I focused my review on the annex. So if you’re looking for a place to stay in Kamikochi, but that everything except the annex of this place is full, do not book it, you’re betting of staying in Matsumoto and take the bus.

For this accommodation, we should understand the difference between two buildings, main and 2nd(Bekkan) and prices of Kamikochi but even so, honestly speaking, Bekkan 2nd building feels expensive for this room and meals. We stayed in a Bekkan, 2nd building's private room which is designed as a climbers' lodge. The room is old and a bit dim, it is cleaned well though. No idea about view as it was cloudy and rainy during our stay. As for meals, I got to say both dinner and breakfast are less than average and tasted cheaply. It feels like everything was served with microwave oven. We understand that Kamikochi is a resort/summer retreat destination so the prices around the area are set high and also there is not much competition. Nevertheless, the amount we paid, 13000 yen per night, does not feel worthy for what we got. (I do not usually feel this way) If you are serious clibmers who enjoy climing itself, this mountain lodge should be ok as you probably get pleasant and exciting experience by climing but for people like us, holiday hikers and tourist who just want to enjoy the scenery and hiking of Kamikochi, those should not expect much for this accommodation. Meal services start exactly as they designate and even 30 mins delay in arrival, they called us to come to dinner, by which we did not feel relaxed staying here as if we are sometimes rushed to follow their schedule. Foreign travelers might feel it stronger. One good thing, the public bath in the main building was good. Sauna equipped as well.

This is a traditional hotel. You have a tatami mat with floor seating chairs and double sliding entry doors. There is no private bath. There are shared toilets and shared onsen style baths. Dinner and breakfast is included. Yukata robes are provided in your room so you can wear them during meals, going to toilet or baths and for pictures. What makes it worthwhile to stay here is their customer service and traditional multi-course meals. Their meals alone are awesome and worth staying here for. The customer service during check in, check out and in between and meal service is great. I also recommend staying in the park because you’re not rushed during hiking by having to try to make your bus schedule. If you have time book two nights for more hiking experiences. It’s peaceful here. We say a traveling badger in the evening and a troop of monkeys in the morning, which you would miss if you’re on the bus visit.

This is an absolute gem!!! You won't find it on booking (as per July 23). If you are lucky enough to find it per google maps, I recommend you book it. You will find an easy to fill out booking form on their website. Via an online form it is easy to change the dates or cancel. They have a very fair cancellation policy. The Nishi-ito-ya mountain lodge is as it says a lodge. There is a main building in Ryokan style and an adjacent dorm building. You have a coin laundry, a sauna (!) and an onsen. The meals are prepared with great diligence and are waiting for you individually served and prepared. The staff go out of their way to make your stay pleasurable. I stayed two nights in Kamikochi, which I enjoyed greatly. It was raining, which made the mountains even more beautiful and the place less crowded.
