I have visited several dozen temples and shrines in Japan so far (filling two and half goshuin books in the process!) and I will say that Kigakurin Banshoji is unlike I’ve seen before! It can a very modern, almost futuristic feel (although the original temple on the site dates back to the 1600’s, it was destroyed in 1945 and rebuilt after the war). Moreover, the way it’s blended into the shopping street feels unusual. It’s definitely worth visiting for anyone interested in temples and shrines, and even for casual visitors, it’s central location (and later closing time than many shrines) makes it seem a shame not to pop by when in town (Osu District being a major attraction in its own right). I collect goshuin (commemorative calligraphy papers), which was the main purpose of my visit. I was blown away by the massive selection - though prices were on the higher end of the scale - ¥500 for a standard size (any design) and ¥1000 for a double size (and design). This included special editions (released each month). Due to the convenient location and great goshuin offerings for my collection I will definitely return. My only criticism is that it feels more commercial and less peaceful than most shrines and temples I...

It was relocated to Osu when Nagoya Castle was built in 1610. There are 2 Karakuri mechanic dolls exhibited to perform "Kouwakamai" dance (Nobunaga danced before going to the battle of Okehazama) and express the scense Nobunaga throwing incenses at his father's funeral. The gaint white dragon, Hakurayu, next to the entrance is very eye-catching. It will perform 6 times per day (11 am, 1 pm 3pm, 5pm,...
Read moreGreat shrine, not very foreigner friendly. I paid for 2 goshuin, one hand written(very pretty) and a pink leaflet. Did not receive the leaflet and when I brought it up they didn't understand that I didn't get it. Have to show every goshuin I had, over 50 and my receipt in order to get it without double paying. I think it was a communication error but I felt like they though I was trying to steal one, which I would never do. A local also had to help communicate for me,...
