The science museum and the planetarium were the focus of my recent day trip to Nagoya from my home in Shizuoka City- especially the planetarium, since I'd read that it is the world's largest and I love planetariums. The building itself was beautiful and quite impressive and the staff was helpful. I believe that the cost was reasonable - 800¥ for an adult.
The extensive science displays were large and well done - and quite crowded on the day we attended, with lots of families with children. And, although the focus of the displays was obviously school-aged children, I think they were interesting enough to engage adults as well - as it should.
The planetarium was indeed large, the projecter powerful, and the reclining swivel seats comfortable, yet I felt disappointed by the current 40-minute show. It was presented live in Japanese, which I expected, but especially given that the focus is youth, there was too little use of the awesome capacity of the room and equipment to show the wonderfully beautiful and awesome spectacle of the universe and its movement. There was far too much talk accompanied by projected facts and figures.
Overall, an impressive facility, in spite of my being somewhat underwhelmed by the current program -...

This museum is a very good example of edutainment. Each of the multiple floors houses up to 3 different themes that are presented in a child friendly and playful way. These themes range from optics and acoustics over biology to technology. Most exhibits invite to play with them and display explanations in writing. Additionally, the friendly employees are always open to questions and even point out some hidden gems amongst the shelves. Additional, shows are scheduled to demonstrate special experiments like tornadoes and high voltage. A very special part is the planetarium on the top floor. It provides 180° rotatable individual seats and even if not every aspect of the explanation can be understood is a welcome break. It requires a small separate entrance fee and is very popular. As the prizes are comparable low, the museum and it's planetarium as very much worth it. The shows as well as the written explanations are only in Japanese but adults should remember most from school. Even without understanding some exhibits, I had a really great time and can recommend it...

better to go early to have slots for the planetarium. Happy that we were able to get the last 5 slots. But SAD with our experience There can be more visitors if they can have ENGLISH subtiles in their videos and english text on their posters. Hard to use google trqnslate and explain to kids who don't have gadgets. 🥴 suggestions: put headphones beside chairs so non Japanese people can choose English to understand what the commentator is talking about. Waste of money in planetarium ticket. Unless u want to sleep and rest coz you see a lot of people sleeping with the comfy chairs. 🤣🤣🤣
It's already year 2025 and they should have this by now. 😵💫🙄 so people can appreciate your hardwork you given to build the planetarium Staffs are friendly.
