The Nagoya City Science Museum (名古屋市科学館, Nagoya-shi Kagakukan) features a characteristic giant silver globe, which houses one of the world's largest planetariums. Programs at the planetarium vary monthly and cover current astronomical phenomena. Although shows are conducted only in Japanese, they can nevertheless be interesting just by looking at the stars and other elements of nature being projected on the huge spherical screen. Five floors of the seven-storied museum are dedicated to a comprehensive array of permanent exhibits, while temporary exhibitions are periodically held in the basement. The permanent exhibits present ample opportunities for visitors of all ages to try their hand at learning science through interactive experiments. They include several large displays such as the "Tornado Lab", the "Electric Discharge Lab" and the "Deep Freezing Lab," which simulates conditions at the earth's polar regions.

My wife, two grade school kids, and I got in at 10am, and left the place at closing time. Every floor had designated sections that highlight the different areas of (you guessed it 😊) SCIENCE! The planetarium could've been more interesting if english subtitles/captions were included (but how'd they do that might be challenging since each area of the dome-shaped ceiling was used to explain the stars and other astronomy-related topics). An hour was not enough to enjoy the section that featured the anatomy & physiology of our body. The many interactive areas, and the several video displays really help us understand the human body. This place is best enjoyed with that "learning" mind set, and not just "photo-ops" if you are a tourist. ¥800 for adult tickets (my kids got in for free since they are elementary students) is a "steal" for a science museum with this extensive, detailed & organized collection of data.

The science museum and the planetarium were the focus of my recent day trip to Nagoya from my home in Shizuoka City- especially the planetarium, since I'd read that it is the world's largest and I love planetariums. The building itself was beautiful and quite impressive and the staff was helpful. I believe that the cost was reasonable - 800¥ for an adult. The extensive science displays were large and well done - and quite crowded on the day we attended, with lots of families with children. And, although the focus of the displays was obviously school-aged children, I think they were interesting enough to engage adults as well - as it should. The planetarium was indeed large, the projecter powerful, and the reclining swivel seats comfortable, yet I felt disappointed by the current 40-minute show. It was presented live in Japanese, which I expected, but especially given that the focus is youth, there was too little use of the awesome capacity of the room and equipment to show the wonderfully beautiful and awesome spectacle of the universe and its movement. There was far too much talk accompanied by projected facts and figures. Overall, an impressive facility, in spite of my being somewhat underwhelmed by the current program - maybe next time.

A wonderful experience. This museum can be both an absolute source of joy and an opportunity for learning for children. Floors 2 to 6 are full of experiments and contraptions designed to explain basic scientific theories while demonstrating real life examples and applications. The exhibition starts with hydraulics, then common electrical and mechanical theories, then comes the waves, and lastly basics of human bodies. The place is so crowded, and each child is having so much fun enjoying science that it’s hard to believe that they are actually learning science which was supposed to be difficult. There is even a train simulator where you can run and control like a real train driver, and it’s an added bonus. If you have interest in science, then it’s highly recommended. If you do not have interest in scientific theories, still it’s recommended as a fun place.

This museum is way above my expectation and imagination. It is a fun place for kids and adults. The entrance fee is only 400 yen for basic visit. Do not think you can see everything in 1 or 2 hour. Hmm 3.0 hour - 4.0 hour should be a reasonable guess. If you love engineering, architecture, building science, You would enjoy even more. The museum is divided to 6-7 level with different themes. The most impressive memory is the machine to simulate a tornado. Of course is a very skinny small tornado (see my picture). The second impressive is a video game for driving a fire truck. I crash the truck in 10 seconds because I don't know how to read Japanese. On second floor, there are vending machines selling drink for 130yen -180 yen with open table/ chair. Will definitely revisit again If I go to Nagoya again. This place should be given 6 stars, not just 5 stars.
