A stroll through Ryukyu history can’t wait to come back!
We spent today wandering around Naha, Okinawa, and stumbled upon something really special: the Shuri Kinjo Town Stone-paved Road. We were actually on our way from Ankokuji Temple, but ran out of time to explore Shuri Castle properly, so that’s definitely on our list for a return visit in a few days!
This historic stone-paved road is a hidden gem that takes you straight back to the Ryukyu Kingdom era. Fun fact: it was originally built during the reign of King Sho Shin in the early 16th century as part of the main road connecting Shuri Castle with other important parts of the kingdom. It’s one of the few remaining stone-paved roads from that time, and walking it really gives you a feel for what it must have been like back when Shuri was the royal capital.
The path is lined with beautiful traditional stone walls and old-style Okinawan houses, and it feels like a peaceful step back in time tucked away from the busy streets of modern Naha.
If you’re visiting Shuri Castle, definitely leave a little time to wander off the beaten path and explore this road it’s living history under your feet. Just wear good shoes (those stones can be slick!), and take your time soaking it all in.
Looking forward to coming back soon to finish our Shuri Castle adventure and...
Read moreThis is a cultural and historical piece of Okinawa that is worth researching before you visit. It's a rather steep climb so, sturdy walking shoes are recommended to traverse the stone pavement and steps. Those pushing children in strollers would have to be in better-than-average shape or, stop to rest frequently. Wheelchairs would only be possible for those in Olympic condition. It's a good idea to carry some drinking water, as tourist traps along the route can be fairly expensive, for those desiring a cold drink or refreshments. I wouldn't traverse the stone pavement, without exploring, to see what's off the side trails. For those wishing to navigate off the beaten path, mosquito repellent would be recommended. Leaving the cobblestone path, the trails become more jungle-like and critters such as snakes may be encountered. Either way, some great camera opportunities can be spotted on and off the...
Read moreMany visitors are not aware of this beautiful stone path just a few minutes walk south of Shuri Castle. This path is listed as one of the 100 traditional paths in Japan. The path retains the atmosphere of the old Ryukyu dynasty and some portions of the path are very scenic. It takes 10 minutes to walk along the whole path downhill from Shuri Castle, but if you want to return to Shuri Castle, the uphill climb takes 15-20 minutes due to the steep gradient. It's also interesting to wander along the side alleys and take a break at the traditional village house (金城村屋) halfway...
