Shurei-mon Gate of Shuri Castle Okinawa Prefecture Cultural Property (building) Designated 12 May 1972 Shurei-mon was formerly the second outer gate of Shuri Castle after the main gate known as the Chuzan-mon. It is thought to have been built during the reign of the Ryūkyüan King Shó Sei (1527-55). The gate was first known as the Taiken-mon and later as the Shuri-mon, names attributable to the plaques bearing the characters read "taiken" (awaited wisdom) and "Shuri”which once decorated it. A plaque with the inscription "Shurei no kuni”(land of propriety) was constructed during the reign of King Shò Ei(1573 -88) and decorated the gate during the stays in Ryūkyū of Chinese investiture envoys. The gate gained its present name, meaning "Gate of Propriety”, after this plaque was affixed permanently during the reign of King Shò Shitsu (1648-68). The gate is the product of a decorative architectural style in the tradition of Chinese turret gates. It has a three-bay structure and a red-tiled double roof of the hip-and-gable type. The gate stands 7.05 m high and the distance between the two outer pillars is 7.94 m. Shurei-mon was designated as a National Treasure in 1933 but was destroyed during the Second World War. The present Shurei-mon is a reconstruction dating from 1958.

Really beautiful place in the Shuri Castle area, would strong recommend even just for seing this door. The renovation is really great. Very calm in the morning. Easy access for wheelchair users. As the castle is under renovation, I would recommend see this instead. It makes the trip towards the castle worth, as the surroundings are equally as beautiful 🤩 I was lucky enough to spot two Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II near it. Not far enough behind it you can see the memorial stones for the Sonohyan-utaki Ishimon

A beautiful place, most of it can be accessed without paying for admission. Along the wall you can see the rest of the town, and the folks that work here are very kind and considerate. In front of the gate is a man and woman who will help dress you in traditional Okinawan clothes and will pose you and take pictures for a cheap price too. They took close to 30 pictures to make sure we had plenty to choose from. I loved it

Shuri castle/park is very beautiful! Everything is so green, and from different areas can you see different parks of Naha city. The cafe has local Okinawa tasties that are worth trying. And you can make your own free postcard. Grab one at the first stamp booth next to the gift shop, as you walk around you slowly complete a post card with an image of the castle. Great souvenir 🤩

鍵盤の調整は、ちょっと重めかも? youtu.be/QEAnmOKNBT0?si=J8s-yxjgisjMk6tw There is a street piano 🎹 in Shuri Castle Park, in Suimuikan. It is a beautiful grand piano decorated with squirrels and grapes. Opening hours: 10:00-17:00. The keys might be a little heavy to adjust, but... youtu.be/QEAnmOKNBT0?si=J8s-yxjgisjMk6tw #日本 #沖縄 #散歩 #Japan #Okinawa #walking #piano #ピアノ #ストリートピアノ
