First of all, make sure that you make a reservation through their website before going. RESERVE IN ADVANCE: REQUIRED. The walkthrough will take an hour and a half. Tip: instead of being on time, be early because you meet at a cafe that you can only use if you come early. There's some good local coffee and juices. I went with my fiancée, but amongst our guided tour (the only way you can get in) was all Japanese families with adorable kids. This doesn't mean that it's a family only kind of thing. In fact, it seems like the next group after ours was filled with young couples, so we just happened to have a group with families. If you want to take your partner here, it's a great tour to enjoy. They have translated scripts of the guide (written, not audio). The guide was nice and she told many interesting anecdotes that even without my Japanese ability I'd have understood because there were pictures to go with her stories. This place and Okinawa World, next to it, have different caves to check out. They're both unique and a must see in Okinawa. Also if you call, there is someone who speaks a little English and they can help you. The guide will only know...
Read moreThinking that it was just a trail through a forest, we were exceptionally pleased at the fascinating history, the ancient cave formations, as well as the beauty of the valley itself. A reservation is required, but we were lucky that there was space when we arrived. The tour isn’t offered in English but this is not a worry at all. They give detailed written information that follows along with the tour guide’s presentation throughout the valley walk. Nakamura was a fantastic tour guide and made sure that we understood what part of the tour we were up to, and was very friendly and enthusiastic about making sure everyone enjoyed the walk. Water bottles with tea are provided during the walk, as well as lanterns to inspect one of the cave formations. Before the tour, you can pay 500 yen per person to enjoy juice or coffee in the cave cafe before the tour briefing starts. We learnt a lot, and it’s always a pleasure to join a tour in a place that focuses more on education and preservation of nature and history than how many people they can let through the doors in a...
"By booking a guided tour, you can experience the origins of humanity, the formation of stalactites, and the ancient culture of Okinawa. Personally, I find it more interesting and worth visiting than Gyokusendo Cave.
We were unable to successfully reserve tickets on the official website, so we decided to try our luck by arriving at the 10:30 AM slot on a weekday. Fortunately, there were spots available, and we felt very lucky! Another option is to ask your hotel in Japan to help you book by phone. Of course, if it rains, it’s better to skip the trip due to the rugged and potentially dangerous path.
P.S. You can drink 35 Coffee inside the stalactite cave only if you have a reservation!
The total guided tour lasts about 1.5 to 2 hours. There are breaks along the way, so it’s not too tiring, but there are no restrooms on the path, so make sure to go beforehand.
Language: The guide for our tour had studied in Taiwan for a year, so they took great care of us!
Group: The tour is conducted in small groups, with about a dozen people. When we went, my husband and I were the only foreigners; the rest were mostly local Japanese.
Preparation: It’s best to wear walking shoes for comfort and long pants to avoid mosquito bites (repellent is provided). Each person is given a water bottle filled with tea to stay hydrated during the tour.
Along the way, you can see items used or inhabited by ancient people, incredibly thick bamboo from Taiwan, lots of butterflies, and Man’s Cave and Woman’s Cave. A Chinese guidebook is available to help you better understand Okinawa's culture.
Overall, it’s a very interesting tour, and not knowing...
