Tanouehachiman Shrine — Attraction in Nichinan

Just about 5 mins walk from the Obi Castle. There are many other important historical places to see on the way, so perfect to get there on foot. There is a car park,which is big enough to park for some cars, beside the shrine.

There were about 70 steps to get to the top. We saw a massive camphor tree, which was about 400 years ago.

They said there was a giant man named Yagoro in the Osumi area who carried the deity of Ichinomiya Hachiman in Osumi on his back and enshrined it here in about 1110. It is said that Yagoro had 2 other brothers, the biggest brother was in Yamanokuchi, and the 2nd one was in Iwagawa. Yagoro in Obi was the youngest one of all.

It was a small shrine but unbelievably sacrid. Worth visiting...

一か月に一度飫肥を散策している。いつも前を通るのになかなか行けなかったこの神社。階段の急さに少し臆していました。(笑) いざ前まで行くと、年配の方がちょうど階段を降りてこられるのを見て一念発起！急だけど、金比羅山に比べるとあっという間に階段が登れた。階段の途中から苔むしてくる。階段の幅も広くなる大きな楠があり、樹齢が400年とのこと。 登りきると本殿があり。一面に苔が！緑！緑のジュータン。少しふかふかしてる。不思議な光景。 静かで、現実から切り離されている空間。 誰もいないからそう感じるのかも。 御朱印は少し下った階段の左手に駐車場がありそこに社務所があったので、いただくことが出来ました。ちゃんと手書きしてくださいました。

顔出しパネルが社内にあったのがびっくり。外にあったら顔を出したい。(笑) このパネル、弥五郎という文字があり調べると大隅国一宮八幡の御神体を稲津弥五郎という方が背負って来、この地に祀ったとの言い伝えからのようです。

禊という言葉がちょっとよぎった。...
