Hakusan Park (白山公園, Hakusan-kōen) is a park in Chūō-ku, Niigata, Niigata Prefecture, Japan.

The 1964 Niigata earthquake caused the sandy soil under the city to liquefy, damaging many city facilities. The aging baseball stadium was converted to an earthquake memorial using funds from the earthquake disaster relief money. This is currently the Niigata Prefectural Hall.

From the 1990s, aging facilities were demolished. A riverside picnic site covering approximately 7 hectares was created, and north and south bound traffic was diverted under the park via a tunnel.

Other facilities in the park, such as : Hakusan Shrine Niigata Prefectural Government Memorial Hall Niigata City Music and Culture Hall Niigata-City Performing Arts Center (Ryutopia) Niigata Prefectural Civic Center Niigata City Municipal Gymnasium Niigata City...

Significance: One of the earliest urban parks in Japan; among the oldest in the country

Designer: Believed to have involved Kume Taminosuke, regarded as Japan’s first park designer

Purpose Hakusan Park was created as part of a Western-style urban planning initiative. It was designed to serve as a space for citizens to relax, learn, and be uplifted morally and spiritually.

Structure The park was developed around Hakusan Shrine's precincts, expanding to include the surrounding area. The shrine and the park have since functioned as a unified cultural and civic space.

Government Policy Context This project reflected Meiji-era policy, which aimed to convert shrine and temple precincts into modern public spaces—a shift in land use following the separation of Shinto and Buddhism (shinbutsu bunri). The transformation was part of Japan’s modernization and...

Sehr sehr lohnenswerter Ort. Sehr empfehlenswert!
