韮崎市にある「わに塚の桜」は、樹齢300年を超えるエドヒガンザクラの単独の巨木で、その堂々とした姿がとても印象的な桜です。周りに建物や他の木がほとんどない田園風景の中に、一本だけ凛と立っている姿は、ただ美しいだけでなく、力強さや孤高の美しさを感じさせます。

この桜の魅力は、その立派な樹形だけでなく、ロケーションの素晴らしさにもあります。天気が良ければ、北側には八ヶ岳が、南側には富士山が背景に入り、桜と一緒に日本の名峰を眺めることができます。特に、水が張られた田んぼに桜や山の姿が映り込む様子は、他ではなかなか見られない美しい光景です。夜にはライトアップもされ、幻想的な夜桜を楽しむことができます。

しかし、近年は人気が高まり、多くの観光客が訪れるため、マナーの悪い人も見られるようになってしまったようです。ロープを乗り越えたり、畑に入り込んだりするような行為が残念ながら目立つため、美しい自然をこれからも守っていくために、訪れる人一人ひとりが配慮することが大切だと感じました。

また、写真撮影をする人にとって、桜のすぐ近くにある送電線が少し残念だという声もありました。写真のアングルを工夫して、送電線が入らないように撮る人もいれば、あえてそれを入れて作品にする人もいるようです。

アクセスについては、甲斐駒ヶ岳や富士山など山々の景色を楽しみながらのドライブがおすすめです。近くには無料の駐車場もいくつか用意されていますが、桜の時期は非常に混雑します。武田八幡宮周辺の臨時駐車場を利用するのも良い方法でしょう。
