Nobeokajō Castle Ruins — Attraction in Nobeoka

Only remain main gate and base of castle. But stone wall is a great built on Edo era, and very good place to watch cherry blossom in Spring. There is big bell on top, and bell keeper is striking it every day to inform time to citizon. you can see his task on 6:00, 8:00, 10:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 17:00. 延岡城跡 古くは縣(あがた)と呼ばれた地に豊臣秀吉の九州征伐後、高橋元種が5万3千石で入国し関ヶ原合戦の翌年の慶長6年(1601年)から３年かけて造り上げたのが延岡城です。 比高50mほどの延岡山に城は造られ本丸を中心に二の丸と三の丸が西と東を固める輪郭式の構造。天守はなかったというのが定説で、代わりに天守台東側の下段に三層櫓が築かれました。現在は石垣のみが残ります。 2017年続日本100名城に選定

【千人殺しの石垣】 本丸の石垣の高さは19m(以前は22mとも)あり総延長は70m。 城内最大のこの石垣は別名「千人殺し」と呼ばれています。 「石垣が崩れると、その下にいる敵兵が1000人は死ぬ」という伝承によると、石垣の隅角部「角の隅石」これを１つ引き抜くと一気に石垣が崩落し下にいる敵が下敷きになる、という仕掛けがあるとのこと。 実際には引き抜くことは不可能ですが、それほど立派な高石垣です。
