11-Day Japan Itinerary: Exploring Shikoku, Osaka, Kobe, and Onomichi

Mountainside temple overlooking Onomichi and the heavily-trafficked Onomichi sea channel. It’s a bit hard to work out what’s what without a good grasp of Japanese and Japanese Buddhism but the views alive make it worth stopping at on an exploration of Onomichi’s winding backstreets. The adventurous should seek out the rocks where you can test your faith (including on the chains you use to pull yourself up and over) on a climb over some of the huge boulders scattered around the top of the mountain. If you don’t mind heights, the views are awesome but it certainly gets the heart racing!

The best view in a lovely place. One of the highlight of Onomichi (with the bike ride toward shikoku and the food 😁) Great view for everyone (i walked up the stairs but there is a cable car). The gardens (in small terraces) along the way are very relaxing and romantic. The temple is nice too but the view is everything. I went there during hanami, it’s even better but even outside outside of hanami i should be good.

Senkoji is a very interesting place. It's an excellent temple and the view of it is beautiful. There may not be much historical enjoyment because of the atmosphere similar to that of a commercial facility. It is a steep road from the parking lot to Chikoji Temple. There are many stairs and steep slopes, so you need to be careful. But it's a fun place. How about hiting the rock?

One of the popular tourist destinations in Onomichi. It offers great views of the town and the neighboring islands. You can either get by car, by a ropeway that runs every 15 minutes or by foot. Walking up to the mountain doesn’t seem a difficult task as long as it is not summer. Otherwise going down walking is the only alternative; it doesn’t take longer than 10 minutes.

I enjoyed the temple walk from Onomichi station more than Senkoji. But the temple is iconic built into the side of the mountain. Iconic temple bell. Amazing sakuras during bloom season. Suggest doing the temple walk finishing at Senkoji the walk back to Onomichi via the shopping arcade across the train tracks.
