Nekonotepan factory — Restaurant in Onomichi

We happened across this place while on the Onomichi temple walk, and we were glad that we did! The proprietor and her two employees were hard at work trying to keep things stocked, and while there was a line, and it did take a little time to get our pastries, it was well worth the wait. The chocolate and almond croissants were the best that we've ever had, even better than ones from France! The kouign-amann was as good as Arsicault bakery or Dominique Ansel. This place is super cute, only one person can stand inside and look at the goods. You can also see how they prepare the doughs. They even make their own puff pastry which is lot of work! I tried one croissant I thinn with nuts and it was fresh, flaky and so crunchy outside, very good quality. The other sweet bread I tried also very nice. I liked that the outside was crunchy im both cases and not soft/chewy as often in Japan. they also had cute homemsde cookies. Very fair prices and nice staff. Probably the smallest bakery ever—only one person can fit inside at a time! But don’t let the size fool you—the buns are fantastic.

Highly recommend getting the thin pizza and anything with cheese—both were super satisfying. There’s a little chair outside where you can sit and enjoy your treats, which made for a perfect snack break.
