This floating temple hall called mangetsuji Ukimido is located in a town of Katata in Otsu City in Shiga Prefecture little south-west of Biwako main Bridge. This place also features one of the eight greatest view of Omi region arond Lake Biwa and sung in a poem of Matsuo Basho. The temple hall houses 1000 statues of Kannon and designated as important cultural asset of Japan. The current structure of the temple hall was built in 1937 and went through repairing in 1982. Those 1,000 statues of Kannon were carved by Saint Genshin of Heian Period ( from 8th to 12th century ) in commemoration to scoop out a golden statue of Budda from the lake around this spot after he noticed a strange light shining in the lake. You can have a nice stroll around the lake near Ukimido Hall.
