I was taking the creaky chairlift to the top of the Mt. Okura Ski Jump, the snow lightly falling on my lap, when I turned around and took a look at the city. One of the most beautiful views my retinas have ever been blessed to see.

You get a vast view of the city from the top, the Sapporo skyline popping out like little legos out of the ground. I felt like I was in a snow globe. These kinds of views really have me pondering my place in the world and in the universe. What does it all really mean?

There is a cafe at the top to get a coffee or some snacks, along with a direct view of the ski jump that hosted the Olympics back in 1972. You get the vantage point the skiers get when they are about to drop in. I got the heebie-jeebies just thinking about having to do that. I don’t want any of that smoke. They built different.

When in Sapporo, you gotta come here to gain some perspective.

One of the "must do" tourist attractions in Sapporo. Take the ski lift to the top for a broad view over Sapporo and on clear days also Ishikari bay. Even in summer, jump practice is pretty common (think water skiing on a special surface). It is pretty amazing to watch, especially if you are riding up the steep slope as someone barrels down the other way. We see aspiring jumpers practicing about 50% of the time when taking guests. If you speak Japanese, you can also call ahead and ask when the next practice sessions are scheduled.
