細川忠興が率いた細川隊は、黒田隊とともに、笹尾山に布陣する石田隊との間で激闘を繰り広げました。黒田隊は関ヶ原バイパスを挟んだ丸山に陣取って石田隊の島左近とぶつかり、細川隊は遮蔽のない平地のど真ん中に陣取りながら、石田隊の蒲生頼郷（配置からの推測です。）とぶつかったようです。山上に布陣する石田隊に正面からぶつかるあたり、戦国一気性が激しいと言われた忠興の猛々しさが感じられます。

忠興はこの戦いで相当奮戦したようですが、このように身を危険にさらしてまで戦ったのは、信長に反逆した明智光秀の娘婿、豊臣秀吉から切腹を命じられた千利休の高弟という、時の権力者から迫害を受けても不思議ではない立場にありながら、父幽斎譲りの才覚で難局を乗り越えてきた彼なりの計算力で、この戦いの後に徳川家の天下が訪れると考えていたからなのかもしれません。

ちなみに足利将軍家に仕えながら織田信長のもとで活躍した父幽斎は、東西両軍が関ヶ原に終結するまでの間、丹後田辺城に籠城して関ヶ原に向かう西軍を釘付けにするという戦略上重要な役割を果たしました。 細川家は、忠興や幽斎の活躍の甲斐あって、関ヶ原の戦いが終結した後に、豊前小倉に加増移封されましたが、この戦いで大きな犠牲を払ったようです。大阪屋敷にいた忠興の妻ガラシャは西軍の襲撃を受け、屋敷に火を放たせ、家来に胸を突かせて亡くなりました。

様々な苦難を乗り越えた細川家は、忠興の三男忠利の代で肥後熊本に加増移封され、明治に至りました。
