Toshoji Temple — Attraction in Sendai

Toshoji Temple is one of five Zen Temple in Kitayama area Sendai. This Temple has extremely large lot, although it allocates large lot of its temple estate to the funeral ground and separate the burial grounds from worship hall with bamboo partition and other fences. It seems to have its fundings mainly from sale of tomb lots to the communities. But its tomb land or funeral grounds are properly maintained, and it hires gardeners to conduct periodic maintenance and gardening.

The temple, including its yard, garden, worship avenue, and tomb lands, are all very neat and clean, and flowers and trees are properly trimmed.

無為山東昌禅寺の見所は、まず参道入り口の地蔵堂です。お堂を見ますと地蔵菩薩坐像があり、龍の天井画の他に外側には阿吽の龍の彫刻も見られます。参道を上りますとアカマツの並木になっています。本堂が当地に移転された頃はアカマツも本数が多かったのでしょう。秋の松茸を期待してしまいますがまあ難しいでしょうね。 山門をくぐり抜けて内側から屋根を見ると降り棟の鬼瓦に鬼がいません。また、よく見ると「桃」が載っています。これは「霊果(れいか)」である事から魔除けの意味をもちます。仙台城の鬼門封じの役目があった東昌禅寺ですから桃果が見られますのは山門の結界を護守する意味なのでしょう。 本堂他については明治初期に火災焼失となり再建されたので古さがない分違った見所があります。画像では地上に鬼瓦が集積されて屋根の鬼瓦には鬼が見られず「経ノ巻瓦」になっています。いわゆる巻いた形で雲のような曲線のデザインです。経典の巻物で鬼門封じをするのでしょうか。さらに破風の懸魚(げぎょ)にあたる部分は波形の彫刻になっていますから建築には結構面白さがあります。石灯籠も曲線的なタイプで火袋の動物も観察しどころです。 鐘楼は東日本大震災で損傷して再建されていますがかなりの重厚な屋根と大梵鐘が特徴で鐘の直下の床面には窪みが設けられています。音響的には反射波を低減する効果がありそうで、倍音を抑えてスッキリした重低音になるのでしょ...
