Shimizuen Garden — Attraction in Shibata

Had an AMAZING experience here! The staff was so kind and welcoming. They even had an English pamphlet for me. Luckily we went on a weekday so we were the only people on there. 旧新発田藩下屋敷大名庭園として、溝口家四代重雄の時に築庭され、名庭のある清水谷御殿として名高い。溝口家は、栄姫が有栖川家に嫁いで天皇家とも姻戚関係があるだけでなく、大成建設のルーツの大倉財閥の祖、大倉喜八郎とも親戚の様子。施設内の一角に初代藩主のひ孫で忠臣蔵や高田馬場の助太刀で有名な堀部安兵衛 伝承館もあり、ファンなら見応えのある内容となっている。

As a daimyo's garden under the former Shibata domain, the garden was built during the reign of the fourth Shigekatsu Mizoguchi of the Mizoguchi family, and is famous as the Shimizudani Palace with its famous garden. The Mizoguchi family is not only related to the Emperor's family through Princess Eihime's marriage to the Arisugawa family, but also to Kihachiro Okura, the founder of the Okura Zaibatsu, which is the root of Taisei Construction Company. 運良く紅葉の季節に訪問しました！ しかも早朝なので誰もいません。

苔むした風情のある門をくぐると 色鮮やかな赤や黄色の紅葉が目に飛び込んできて、一瞬で心を奪われてしまいました。

ここは10万石大名溝口家の遺構。 東日本一と言われる国指定名勝で 江戸時代の庭園です。

中央に草書体の「水」の字を型どった大泉池のある回遊式庭園だとか。 要するに、池の回りをぐるっとまわりながら庭を愛でて下さいって事ですね(笑) 日本庭園の詳しい事は知識がないので分かりませんが……… 美しいものは美しい。 どこから見ても絵になります。

苔も見事です。 苔の大部分は「ウマスギゴケ」という種類。 そばを流れる新発田川や庭の池が 多湿を保ち、苔の生育に良いのだそうです。 緑の苔に落ちたもみじの葉。 絵に描いたように綺麗でした。

また、川を隔てた路すじの「足軽長屋」は、入園料700円に含まれているので見学できます。

茅葺き屋根の八戸の長屋です。 主屋は９坪、２坪の炊事場と１坪の土間。 幕末の下級武士(足軽)の生活ぶりを垣間見る事ができます。
